2012 SoCal Century a Month Challenge Ok folks it’s that time of year again to start thinking about your goals for 2012. What better goal than to do a century a month to keep your fitness level up and to be ready for any organized ride you wish to do without worrying if you’re “in shape” for it....
Post 'em up if they're not full and please include the link if known. Will update this list as they appear. Corrections & suggestions welcomed. PM me if you'd like your Username listed either as a definite, a maybe, or a volunteer. Figure it'll give us a better chance to meet up, carpool, etc....
During the past two months there have been several robberies on the Santa Ana Riverbed in Santa Ana between 17th Street and Edinger. The robbers mostly target lone riders, usually between 6PM and 8PM. The good news is that on Sunday, February 6th, three of the robbers were caught. We showed...
SoCal asks: Who are you? What do you look like? What do you ride? Where do you ride? You like to pose? Post pics! On the bike, off the bike, posing, whatever!..:D
Didn't we have one of these stickied? Oh well. Fire away. I need to look at local rigs again.

Who's in for this year? Sounds like a lot of pain-filled fun. :)
Friday night in the Artsy District of Santa Ana, a person on riding his bike was ticketed because he should have been walking his bike. Perhaps just a warning would of sufficed? It sort of ticked me off, because of the recent cyclist muggings on the SART. The two officers who ticketed the guy...
Took my girlfriend up to Mandeville Canyon for her first time...proud she made it all the way to the top. She was absolutely exhausted when she got to the gate that she couldn't unclip and tipped over. :p This is the second time I've been charged at by a deer while riding and they may look cute...
Yesterday about 2:30 PM I was riding the Santa Anna River path from the ocean to Hwy 91 and back. I made good time to the 91 and turned back to the beach to meet my wife. I was buzzing along at about 14 mph and if you ever have ridden this path you know that about every mile there is an auto...
Why must the City of San Diego make matters worse by striping new bike lanes over completely unridable pavement and then expect cyclists to ride in them?
A friend and I are planning a ride to Mt. Baldy or thereabouts some time in the next couple of weekends. We are both relative beginners and have done at most 60 mile rides. The extent of our climbing experience are Sta. Susana Pass, La Tuna Canyon, and Griffith Park/Mt. Hollywood Drive. Can...
Just an FYI in case anyone is interested: http://velopasadena.myshopify.com/ Wish I could go......
101 mile loop through all of Orange County. Rad Fondo #5 is a group training ride. Pace is winter distance with 2 quick rest stops. Rest stops are snack/drink supported. Lunch is provided after the ride. Free! I have sponsors that support the event. We have added free massage after the ride...
I was originally planning riding from Red Box to Dawson Saddle. Now I'm just thinking of riding up Big Tujunga to Clear Creek and back down AC. I've never ridden up there while it's cloudy. Is there any danger I should be aware of? Is visibility the main issue or does it just appear worse from down...
I mean the ones that are NOT part of a street. Thanks
Just a head's up - the SGRT is closed and under construction south of Peck to the 4 corners area. Closed as in - the bike path has been torn out; they're starting over. So - unless you're cool with doing a few miles on dirt, you'll need to adjust your routes accordingly.
71 miles with HerbM, MarkAJ, TomBunn, and their buddy Glen. Wow, nice day and ride. Encanto Park (Duarte) to Seal beach on the SGRT. Tom's plan was to do a portion of the ride after a vacation from the bike. So after he dropped off, the 4 of us headed to Seal Beach. MarkAJ and his buddy Glen are...
So my boyfriend just recently got a job in Santa Monica and a new apartment 4.5 miles away. Perfect for him to be able to bike to work! His birthday is coming up and I would like to get him a bike for his birthday. I am wary about purchasing a really expensive bike since I'm paranoid about it...
1. After reading about the SART mugging problems, what unsafe areas should we concerned with while riding mostly Highway 1 ACA route from San Francisco to San Diego? 2. Would it be comfortable using our Keen cycling sandals in mid-April as long as we bring bootie/covers to keep our feet dry in...
I am wanting to take my wife on our tandem for a short bit on SART to PCH in Huntington Beach. From there on towards the UCI campus for lunch. It looks on Google Maps that PCH to N. Bayside Dr. to Back Bay Dr. to Eastbluff Dr. to Brown Trail and finally to Peters Canyon Trail. Can anyone with...
Just curious if any users on here either live or cycle through Seal Beach? I go slow cruising about 12mph around the beach and up the San Gabriel
So I just noticed that the registeration for "Mulhallond Challenge" and "Heartbreak Onehundred" are open and "Breathless Agony" opens on 01/09/11 at 8:00am. (I heard they fill up fast but it didnt happen last year. After riding Breathless last year I plan on riding all three this year. I want that...
I've finally decided to take a plunge and get into biking. I've looked at a couple places for bikes and both of them recommended to me the Giant Roam. From what reviews I've seen it's a good value (Roam 1), but I'm iffy spending $580 on a bike. I originally planned on just picking one up from...
I just read that a cyclist went down in Irvine this morning. http://www.ocregister.com/news/bicyclist-340267-authorities-crash.html Please pray for him and his family.
Anyone up for weekday road rides? Recently moved here from San Francisco and I don't know anyone down in SoCal so I've been riding solo trying to work out some good routes. I'm located in Mid City LA so I've been hitting the Ballona Creek Bike path from it's start in Culver City down to Redondo...
Several times, I rode Encinal to Decker to Mulholland (in both directions), but have never done The Snake down to The Rock Store and to Lake Vista back to Mulholland and right on Las Virgenes and ride through the tunnel to Pepperdine? We did 4,890' of climbing Saturday and 70.1 miles in just under...
hi, I'll be riding in Ojai next weekend and am thinking of including this road. I saw a few web posts on it, but was wondering how this ride is on weekends. Does that route get a lot of weekend traffic, motorcycles etc.? Is the first tunnel safe to ride without a light? Water along the way? Thanks...
Did the Palm Springs tour/102 miler and it was great, well except the first 20 miles uphill with a gail sandstorm. Besides the sandstorm nothing to report negatively, easy sailing, 3000 ft elevation gain. Once we started down hill the wind was in our backs, got to 47 mph at one point, trying to...
My wife and I are new to cycling. We'll be staying at The Cliffs in Pismo Beach, CA this coming Saturday and we'd like to get out for a ~2 hour (~30 mile round trip) ride. We'd be starting at the resort on Shell Beach. Any suggestions (with some details) for a good path to take? If this forum...
I'm coming down to LA at the end of next month to visit my sister and would like to bring a bike to get around and have fun with while her and her husband are at work. It'll be my SSCX bike since it's versatile and fun to ride. I was wondering if any of you could recommend some light to medium...
Dear Huntington Bay Board of Directors (and many cyclists blind copied with this message). Our UPS driver alerted me that another UPS driver was attacked, beaten, and robbed (bike, cell phone, & wallet) about 7:15 PM, January 30, 2012. He was riding alone on the Santa Ana River Trail in...
well now the sender has sent me a message insulting me that my posting is not tactful. so i guess the message is that the madone may be on craigslist.
Our beloved GMR, the Baldy ski lifts, Big Bear Lake. Going to be a great tour. The Big Bear stage starts about a mile from my house. Might take in three stages this year, (ITT in Bakersfield, Palmdale to Big Bear, and Ontario to the ski lifts). Hyperlink to stage maps and profiles Maps and...
Any suggestions? I'm looking for a fast riding but not quite in shape for a hammerfest. Thanks!
My buddy, who does not ride, suggested I take a weapon with me if I wanted to make the ride from the 91/55 freeways area toward the ocean via the Santa Ana River Trail. He claimed the area around Angel Stadium was a frequent 'problem area' for bike riders. Is this true? Should I NOT make that...
Just wondering if there were any cyclists going to do the Surf City half marathon this Sunday. Was looking for a carpool. I live in Woodbridge Village in Irvine. Anyone? Bueller? :)
Looking for someone to ride with on Thursday evenings on the Santa Ana River Bike Trailf rom Santa Ana to Newport Beach and back. I have been riding this trail for 3 years in the evenings and would like to have a partner. Let me know. Thanks.
Just passing on the info for anyone in the area. ATTENTION! PLEASE HELP US. Be on the look out for three teenaged Hispanic males two possibly walking and a tbird in a neach cruiser. They also have a black Pit puppy with them. If you spot them call the police. They just stole a bike from us @...
SART 02/04/12 ...flat 42 Wow, where to begin? So many friends out there today, some we hadn't seen in a while. First ran into Louie promoting his upcoming Sikad ride to a couple of riders, Ray and Ron. One dude on the trail shouted my name but I'm not sure who he is, I'm thinking a forum member I...
A 3-foot bicycle passing law has been passed by the Caly legislature and is awaiting Gov. Brown's signature. I favor this law, but I have pause about the part that says a car passing a bicycle can go no more than 15 mph faster than the bike. Imagine that happening on the freeway portions of the...
Hi. I'm in Aliso Viejo. I'm riding for my third time in the King Ridge Granfondo up in Santa Rosa, and trying to find out if anyone nearby is riding in this year's edition.
My Girlfriend and myself were flagged down by a couple of riders. They were asking for a doctor or paramedic. A rider had suffered a heart attack and crashed over the guard rail and into the bushes. They had started CPR on him and called 911. The responce time was very poor. This occured south of...
Recieved this info in an email yesterday and thought I would pass it along. I have no connection to anyone or group involved in this. You will have to register for their site, but it is painless and worth it. :50: Important Announcement For All Cycling Enthusiasts The Amgen Tour of...
I'm registering for the Tour de Palm Springs in February. This will be my first TdPS so I would like to get the jersey but there's nothing on the site that describes the fit. I usually wear a medium (women's) club fit. Does anyone have a jersey from a recent event, and can you describe the...
Anyone know about this ride. I heard its a hard ride/semi race. Time, meetup place, cost?? Thanks
A windy day on SART. Forecast said 20 mph winds. Tough in some sections but nothing too tough. Gina and I rode alone today so we were just cruising along. I did fight the wind then let Gina set the pace on the way back to the coast just to let her conserve energy while doing her pace. As we got...
This was stolen a couple days before Xmas. I'm a new member so I thought I'd post a photo in case it gets spotted. Unfortunately I don't have the serial # because the paperwork was lost. However there's not to many of these Santa Cruz Juliana's sold so I figure it was worth a try. One thing that is...
This morning on SART just north of the southern most river crossing we came across a group of riders pulled over around 11am. As we pulled up we saw a person down with another rider performing CPR. We don't know what happened, who it was or how long the incident had been going on . We continued...
Found battery pack this afternoon on a Castaic MTB trail. Hit me up with a message if it's yours. -Toby
Greetings all. I am from the Midwest and will be taking a 1 week family vacation to Disney Land in March. I am not going to be able to bring a bike and most of my time will be filled with various family outings. Can anyone recommend a bike related activity to do in and or around Disney Land? We...
Two days ago while on a ride through Palos Verdes Estates I got blocked in on Paseo Del Mar due to fire and police activity. Turns out they were recovering a body from the cliffs below. Since I was stuck I decided to shoot some video. **nothing graphic** At the begging of the video you can...
This wind is ruining my riding :( 33mph with 42mph gusts right now. Woke up and got ready to ride but my parents didn't let me. Hopefully the wind will ease off by tomorrow.
You were wearing a dayglo yellow/green windbreaker and you seemed to be zipping along pretty well. The stop sign at Holder St. and Myra Ave. that you blew through while southbound on Holder isn't optional. Bicycle or car doesn't matter - we all have to stop. My hope is that you don't get hurt...
I am wanting to buy a used 50-52 cm road bike... Mine (Trek Pilot WSD) was stolen in March, then I got pregnant, so I am looking to get back on the saddle!! please let me know if you have one for sale! Thanks..
Are any of you cyclocross riders? How do/did you get started? Are there any weekly recurring rides near West LA/Santa Monica?
