Well he got his wallet out
And he cruised to the supplement stand now

Seems he forgot all about the steroids
That they put in their pow pow
And with the announcer blasting
Goes racing just as fast as he can now

And he'll have fun, fun, fun
till USADA takes his medals away
(Fun, fun, fun till USADA takes his medals away)

Well the guys can't stand him
'Cause he climbs like a hot air balloon now
(just like a balloon now, just like a balloon )
He makes the national crit look like the Roman chariot race now
(You sprint like jet now, you sprint like a jet)
A lotta guys try to catch him
But he drops them right on their face now
(they can’t keep pace now, they can’t keep pace)

And he'll have fun, fun, fun
till USADA takes his medals away
(Fun, fun, fun till USADA takes his medals away)

Well you knew all along
That the testers were gettin' wise to you now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
And when they took your urine cup
You were thinking that your glow was all through now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)

But you were jacked up so high
That the cup nearly burned right through now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)

And you had fun, fun, fun
till USADA took your medals away
(Fun, fun, fun till USADA took your medals away)
(Fun, fun, fun till USADA took your medals away)

(Fun, fun, fun till USADA took your medals away)
(Fun, fun, fun till USADA took your medals away)

I already saw the 'he's a nice guy defense' trotted out.

The whole thing is a giant face palm. Yes, it was most likely in a can of his protein powder that he can't name due to legal reasons.

When I lived in LA and was not racing or training with bicycles, my nephew came to visit and was attending college at the time. He was on the football team and was telling me how they were told by the trainer not to take any supplements. I have always known it is up to the athlete to not inject any banned substances with or without his knowledge. I did not know about the possibility of tainted Spanish beef.

It is pretty clear that if one tests positive, one needs a great trail of evidence to prove accidental ingestion assuming that USADA actually buys the story and I think it will only result in a reduced suspension.

Another way to play this is to buy supplements and check them for PEDs and take the ones that test positive and then play dumb.

I bet Hammer nutrition product sales have increased.

I was in the area of the state TT course yesterday (about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson), and decided to swing by the site of my crash. Mentally reliving it, I've felt like (a) I should have been able to stay up, and (b) I shouldn't have been injured as severely as I was. I no longer feel that way! What in my mind was an apron of soft gravel is actually a (short) wavy apron as hard as the pavement, but covered in loose gravel and strewn with rocks. Oh, and which leads into a boulder inhabited ditch. Hitting the apron on the aerobars at 25+, there was no way I was doing anything but crash. Had I clearer understanding of the apron landscape at the time, I would have intentionally laid it down, rather than trying to stay upright and slamming over the way I did. I would have lost lots of skin, but maybe not broken any bones - hard to say given how fragile shoulders are when you land on them wrong - which is pretty much any way you land on them.

Anyway, once my inattention to the road got me to the edge of the apron, I was toast.

Closure, I hope?

I've done what you have, ridden past the site of my last crash and tried to analyze "what if". My best answer is that I should have been further out on the road, and not so close to the gutter. I've filed that away for future reference, there is nothing I can do about what has happened. I was lucky, though, AzT, I didn't break anything except my helmet. I did tarnish my reputation, though. Everytime I show up for coffee after a singular training ride, I get asked "did you crash again?" Smart asses.

A couple of Arizona guys just went pro, with team SmartStop. One of them is the guy I've referred to as "Mr. Freaky Fast", Eric Marcotte. Great guy - hope he and Travis do well.

Marcotte is my kind of crit racer. I always keep an eye on him when I'm watching the NCC race streams. He crushed it on Cry Baby Hill last year.

Its a great team with some excellent young talent. Adam is one heck of a leader.

Everyone around here loves the guy. He is very giving with his expertise, which is considerable. He gives lectures covering everything from nutrition to mechanics, and will mentor at our Tuesday night practice crits. Riding with him is an eye opener, to put it mildly. He is also a total health nut - filtering his water for the specific impurities where he lives, doing as much of his training as possible where the air is clean, etc. Interesting that his background from college days was as a body builder. He has shared some of his files, and what he can do at the end of a long hard race is mind-boggling.
