XTR parts

Can't make up my mind on the parts.

here is the dilema:

to buy used
2008XTR shifters/brakes combo
2008 XTR calipers
2008 XTR derailleurs
for 450$

or brand new
2006 XTR shifters/brakes combo
2006 XTR calipers
2006 XTR derailleurs
2006 XTR crankset
2006 XTR cassette
for 500$

all this would go on my 2004 Specialized Epic

or just to get this brand new bike for 1700$:

Looks like your new bike has pretty good components already. Why not just keep your bike as-is for a while?

What kind of riding do you do? Does your 4" travel epic work well or do you really need a 5.5" FS rig? If you just need the epic, I'd say get the newer XTR (assuming it's in good condition.) They did a lot in 08 that really improved it.

well Epic is 2004 and this one is 2009 model, plus adjusting the travel is not a problem ,do you know what exactly they improved in 2008?

It'll be lighter, better brakes, shadow rear der, dual pull front der. And does your epic have disc brakes or rim?

i really like that the new shimano stuff is push or pull for downshift (so you can shift like shimano or sram) also the shadow derail is really cool. Oh wait are you looking at dual control levers... you said shifter break combo i hate dual control, but i guess to each his own

As stated above, the biggest question is: does your Epic fulfill all of your needs/expectations such that some new parts would make a great-for-you bike perfect for you? If you can answer 'yes' to that, then you have your answer right there. If not, then it's time to give serious consideration to the new mount.

I'm running a 2005 LX rear shifter on the Komodo and a 2007 Deore dual release on the crapper. To tell you honestly...I think they perform pretty-much on par with each other. The LX "feels" nicer as far as fit and finish, but the dual release is fun sometimes.

I'd always err on the side of updated technology. Instead of used 08 xtr, buy new 09 xt.

If it's really dual control than XTR is really the way to go.

06 xtr no doubt. they look WAY better than the fukin transformer **** everyone seems to like now.

and may i ask where you find brand new 06 xtr at? i stopped looking but i couldnt ever find a crankset for under 300 that didnt look like ****, groups were way worst and never new

i personally think 500 is a way better deal for buyin all new stuff

I have 06 XTR dual controls (F/R der's) and for my needs they are the best. I still have to look down half the time when I shift the front chain rings because it is so smooth I am not sure it shifted (It always did). I have Shimano XT Thumb shifters (20+ years old still going strong, but not quick, don't think I even really serviced them and I ride in -20 to -30 with salt on the roads, Hmmm they are pretty good!), I had Grip shifters (did not like), I have XTR Trigger shifters (pretty good but much prefer the dual controls). The brakes are also strong and progressive, just my 2 cents.

Well I usually shift from the the small ring to the big ring after going from a incline over a hill to a downhill. So I go from hard pedaling up to easy pedaling/coasting down for a second. If I just shifted on the flats (which I usually only shift the rear der) It would make a bigger difference.
