140mm rear disc, am I the only one?
So I just set up my hardtail with 160/140 front/rear BB7 brakes, and after one ride I am very happy. After a short break-in the 140mm rear seemed great even with a real grippy 2.1" tire. Is anyone else running 140 rotors with mountain calipers?

So you're saying now you have plenty of braking power...but not so much as to flex the dickens outta the SID?
I've been told that some 140mm rear rotors are much, much quieter than some 160mm rear rotors...on some frames, and if you don't live in an area with a ton of DH where you'll make it glow...you may as well go with the smaller ones.

I have more braking power than grip in the rear it seems. The 160's weren't to noisy before except for the occasional squeal when muddy. I'll have to go for a nice muddy ride with the 140 to test that out.
With a 203mm rotor that SID would flex so much that the brakes would rub while cornering on pavement. That was quite the overkill.

Just curious as to why you opted for a 140 at the rear instead of the usual 160. Did you do it so that it would minimize rear wheel lock? If you're planning to run "skinnier" tires than the 2.1 on the rear, this makes even more sense.
A smaller rotor would theoretically be more likely to overheat during prolonged braking, but if you hardly do that in your style of riding, then a 140 would probably hold-up as well as a 160 rotor...
Out of intererst, is your 140 an original Avid rotor? I'm interested in the rotor shape... any pics?

It still locks up pretty easy with the 140, but obviously not quite as easy as 160. I'm not really worried about overheating anything on this bike, it only weighs about 25 lbs or so.
Its an Avid Roundagon rotor, but i'm not sure if they sell the 140mm rotor with a mountain caliper as a package. I could be mistaken, though.

Sids have never been known to be flexy.

A friend with an 08 Epic, "Dealer Edition" in red. has a 140 rear. It's got all the stopping power a rear brake needs in this area.
