buying a new mountain bike
I am thinking of buying a new mountain bike, but i need some help. I will be using it everyday to get to my train station starting in the spring. My current mountain bike is falling apart and i think its like 13 years old i am not sure i bought i from someone.
My commute to the train station is 3.6 Miles each way. I love going down trails. I just have some questions
1. Whats the difference bewteen a hard tail bike and a soft tail bike?
2.is 350$ for a mountain bike considered a cheap MTB?
3. Where should i buy the MTB?

Go to your local bike shop (LBS) and ask questions, see what they got and what they recommend.
A good entry level mountain bike will run you $600 and up; you can get one cheaper if all you're looking for is a cheap commuter.
Read through the posts here and search, you'll learn a lot.

A hardtail has a solid rear triangle with no rear suspension. A softail is the simplest form of rear suspension, having a rear shock, but no pivot or moving parts, so it relies on the flexing of the chainstays (which are solid).

"Mart" bikes are OK for a commuter riding back and forth 3.6 miles with a few little trails here and there. If you are looking to do some extended rides for exercise or adventure or just to feed the speed beast within, you will want to spend more.
You can get a decent bike for $350. from CraigsList. Don't be afraid to barter. If someone is asking $500. and you wave $350 GREEN under their nose, you might get a deal.
I like a hardtail bike. Its what I've been riding for 20 years. The technology on the Soft tails\full suspension is so much better now days that you probably don't loose much traction to the back tire as in the 90s. IMHO
I love riding and the more I ride, the further I want to go. I think Mountain biking will snag you like a good woman and make you fall in love. Prepare for the adventure.

Daspydr might be right when he said:
But, keep in mind he also said:
It may be better get a bit better bike right off the bat and be prepared. I made the mistake of buying a cheap bike and breaking the fork pretty quickly (one of the most expensive components). You can find some great deals on CL if you shop shrewdly.

You say you'll be using the bike to commute to the train station? If so, I'd take the current bike and get it tuned up, new cables, tires, chain etc... basically back into running order. No sense in buying brand new if that'll be it's only purpose. An older looking bike will be lesser of a theft target while locked up at the train station.
