FNG! Haven't been on a bike in a while.

Just purchased a left 2010 Rockhopper and so far I love it. I plan to do a lot of riding with the family and then some rugged trail riding with some buddies who have nice bikes also.

As stated before, it's been awhile since I owned a bike, so if you could give me your opinion on my purchase, maybe whats good about it, and what are its weeknesses, that would be great.

Should be a solid bike for 'Raising Cain' on the trails... But really, I don't have this bike but I have a Giant Rincon with similar componetry, I'm sure. Or yours may actually be a bit better. It's a great starter bike, you'll probably become a pro at adjusting your rear derailler (I have to adjust mine all the time) and brakes.

After 2.5 years I sorta just want more performance from everything (brakes, fork, drivetrain, less weight), but like I said, a great entry level bike. Enjoy, man.

This thread is classic BFnet material

"I bought a bike. Is it good? I already bought it so it doesn't matter, but is it good?"
"Well...I don't have that bike, but mine is just like yours only a different brand with similar components...except my components are different from yours...yours may be better than mine, actually."

michshi...your bike rocks hard. It's a perfect trail bike and you will have loads of fun on it fo sho! Enjoy.

'Nator...You funny! The Rincon is a good ride too. +1 on becoming proficient at adjusting the drive train. Will save tons of cash and frustration. I get your need to squeeze the most out of the bike...but priorities keep me from buying new crap. A good entry level ride is adequate for many.

Ride on!

I like your mustang - I have a Dodge Caravan, not really the same but I have to put air in the tires alot, get used to it. I like the bike too, but the little hot rod on the left is my favorite.

Ride the bike, good way to get back on the dirt - it's a great "gate way" bike, if you don't really get into riding dirt, you'll have a solid bike - if you do, in a short time you'll be coveting bikes that cost 10x as much.

Well since you mentioned the car! I might as well show it off.

Same bike I bought this winter. Take off all those reflectors and change the pedals, then ride hard and learn. I think the '10 has a hair better components than '11, I like the BB5's so far and think the Tora shock would suit this bike better, but so far it does what I'm capable of. Tires work good on our trails here.

Going to do what is suggested here on BF and learn to ride this bike and get a feel for stuff and then buy a better bike with what all I want on it later instead of spending/upgrading on something that will set or get sold.

My LBS suggests finding a whole bike to upgrade next year even if it means compromising on a few components instead of buying a frame and putting exactly what I want on it.

I know they are thinking the bike makers are putting together "systems" that work instead of newbies like me choosing components. Can't I research the stuff and make good choices with the help of LOTS of people who know these things too?

Awesome bike!....I bought the same one about a month ago. I tried several bikes and loved the Rockhopper the best. I have ridden the heck out of since I got it. I use it to commute to work during the week and tear up the trails on the weekends. The tires that come on it are great for road/trail use. The pedals that come on it suck. I replaced them. Also I hated the Altus front derailleur so I put a Deore on it. Much better. And the SR Suntour crankset that came on it kicked the bucket after a couple weeks of riding so my LBS replaced it under warranty with a Shimano Alivio crankset. I think I paid about a hundred bucks too much for this bike considering it is a 2010 model but I'm super happy with it. I probably won't upgrade it much except maybe the fork and tires when they wear out. I keep reading that the avid 5 discs suck but I like them so far. Maybe avid 7's when the 5's are shot. My wife loves my bike so if I can get her hooked on riding she might inherit this bike and I might get a Stumpjumper : ). The geometry on the Rockhopper is so nice, I feel completely in control when I'm riding it. You won't regret buying the Rockhopper comp!
