Need a new 7 speed Derailleur!
Hey guys,
I broke my derailleur recently so Im looking for a new one. The stuff I ride is pretty rough and my budget is small; I'm saving up for other things. I need something light, durable and cheap.
What should I get?

Long-cage Sora; should be at/under $30.

That's not a problem. Almost all Shimano 8/9 speed derailers are interchangeable with 7 speed. The recommended long cage SORA will work for you. As an example, our 8 speed 05 Rockhopper came with an OEM Deore rear dr that says "9 speed" right on the derailer. Never had a problem with it. 8 speed and 7 speed use the same chain and all 8 speed derailers work with 7 speed. Many, but not quite all 7 speed derailers work with 8/9 speed. A few early 7 speed derailers don't have enough travel to work well with the wider 8/9 speed cassette but those are almost ancient now.
If you're really concerned about the 9 speed thing, buy a Shimano Altus derailer. It's found on many new 7 speed MTBs.
My personal recommendation would be to buy a used late model LX or Deore off ebay. I've had very good luck with those. Just stay away from any "tourney" level derailers.

JensonUSA has the M-581 Deore LX rear DR on sale for $34.99... $5 more than the Sora, but a much more durable DR for OR use.

^^ I never had a problem racing DH on Soras. We used them because they're cheap expendable to be sure; but, honesty, with an aluminum knuckle and a steel cage, I have a feeling it could take a hit better than my X-9 .
