8 speed and 9 speed compatbility question.

Hi Guys,

Just trying to cheap out on a build, can I run an eight speed chain through a nine speed LX front deurailler and 9 (?) speed Saint rear?. That way I can use my eight speed cluster and crankset.

Has anyone done this and did it work?

Yes you can as long as the rear isn't a 10 speed. 8 and 9 speed rear derailleurs use the same pull ratios while the 10 is different and won't work with 8/9 speed shifters.

Ill second that. I've been running a mega 9 deore back, mega 9 alivio front and a 9spd raceface ride crankset with 8spd alivio shifters 7/8 spd chain and an 8spd hg-30 cassette successfully

Actually, a few years ago Specialized was using 9 speed Deore rear derailers on their 8 speed MTBs. I bought one. Works great.

It turned out to be moot point. When I inspected the chainrings minus dirt and plus glasses the chainrings were buggered so I went all ninespeed with the crankset and cluster.
