Quarq Power Meter on Road and Cross bike

Quarq Power Meter on Road and Cross bike
Financial Dilemma: My coach wants me to buy a power meter (I want to buy one now too). I have been avoiding it for the last two seasons but its time to splurge. However I am now transitioning from my road bike to my cross bike for the fall. So the question is: can I buy a Quarq power meter that will fit and be suitable for both bikes? I would like to install it on my cross bike now and then put it on my road this winter after cross season.
Will I just be killing myself on the cross bike with the larger ratio? I can't afford one for each bike.
My bikes:
Road bike is a Cervelo S5 with 50/34 ration
Cross bike is Lemond Poprad 46/36 ration
Quarq has the same version for both bikes. S975 but with different rations.
Ideas?

Just swap the chainrings from road compact to cx when you move the Quarq back and forth.
Methinks you'll just end up buying another one for the other bike eventually though.

At the amateur level (i.e. paying out of your own pocket) I don't get the power meter on a cross bike thing at all. Just another thing to break.
A power meter isn't going to help you learn to lay off the brakes.

I don't know if you've ever raced cross before, but you'll never have time to glance down at your numbers anyway. Save it for your road bike.

My two cents: put the Quarq on the road bike and leave it there. If you want to do power based workouts on the trainer, you'll be all set. For me, CX is more about trying not to crash and less about "gosh, I better dial it down to 275w here or I'll bonk."

I don't race cross, but can say I have a set of the power tap pro alloy wheels in the 32 spoke rim, and think they would be suitable for both road and cross if you choose to go that way.
