clipless/platform pedals

Looking for any info on clipless/platform pedals for my kona jake. Never used clipless before but would like to spend between $50-$75. Types of riding i do (when time allows) pulling the kids in the burlery piccolo and or trailer to anything from gravel, level b, and pavement roads. Should i look for a wide platform and something with a little grip and i know very little about clipless pedals. Thank you all and have a great day!!!

I prefer something with at least a little platform so I have a bigger target and some support. I current use old style Crank Brothers Candy pedals which are quite popular CX pedals because they clear mud well. If you want even more platform Crank Brother Mallet DH racing pedals use the same cleat and have a full platform you can ride in flat shoes for short distances. The new Shimano SPD "Trail" pedals have a bit more platform and Shimano also makes full cage DH pedals if you prefer SPD. Price wise you have to shop around a bit and see what you can find, most of my pedals were on sale or closeouts.

It is hard to go wrong with SPD's - they have been around forever, and work great. Easy to get in and out of, double-sided, and a wide range of shoes (you can even get SPD sandals!).

You could get a pair of these if you want a wide platform:
Shimano PD-M324 SPD Dual Platform Pedals | Competitive Cyclist

Though, I really prefer a true double-sided SPD. I had the A530's (platform on one side and SPD on the other) for a few years, and didn't like having to flip the pedal over to clip in all of the time. Or, on the rare occasions I did ride without my SPD shoes, I'd have to flip the pedal over to get to the platform side.

I have these pedals, and haven't even needed to service or adjust them in 5 years of riding:

I run the Shimano PD-324 pedals on my gravel grinder.

+1 for Shimano PD-324 pedals. Work great with cleats or a pair of flip flops!

I like them on my do-it-all commuter, but offroad, I'd much rather have either platforms or double-sided clipless.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I know i can get the shimano pd-324 from my lbs., but going to do some more searching. Plus have to donate more plasma and sell some things around the house to pay for new pedals and shoes. Thanks again

I am all about supporting my LBS, and I did, in fact, purchase my first 3 sets of clipless pedals from local shops. Now my wife and son use clipless pedals. With all my family bikes, I eventually realized I needed to be able to switch out pedals from one bike to another, so I bought a pedal wrench (from a LBS) for about $10 and figured out how switch out pedals. So now I don't need to pay the huge mark up my LBS charges for pedals.

Last year, I picked up two pairs of Shimano M540 pedals at a seriously discounted price. Whatever you choose, whether it be the venerable Shimano M324, or 530, or Crank Brothers, or Nashbar, or Wellgo. Look around sites like Nashbar or Amazon and you should be able to find a set of pedals for $25 to $40.
