Hearing loss?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hearing loss?

Fairly new rider here..., been back riding for a couple years now. However, the wind noise while riding eems to working on my hearing a bit. Even noticed a couple of instances with complete loss of hearing in one ear for short durations..., kind of like water in the ear.

Any recommendations foreign noise abatement while riding? I have seen these mouse ear things, but those look funky.

I wear the squishy foam ear plugs, especially if I am riding near a lot of fast moving traffic.

Wear ear plugs. Used to always wear them when racing motorbikes. Hearing loss is a *****.

It's probably from hard breathing and air messing with your eustacium tubes.

Mouse ears?
Or do you mean Cat ears? Cat-Ears, LLC - Reduce Cycling Wind Noise
Yeah, they look kind of funky, like bad fake sideburns, but try 'em, you might like 'em. They don't block sound, they reduce the noise created by turbulence.

Thanks....just ordered a set to test. Anything is better than what I am experiencing presently.

just make your own... a little bit of felt fabric wrapped around your helmet straps and held together by velcro works wonders, and it'll only set you back like $5 or so.

Pay $8.50 plus s/h for a set of cat ears (the cheapest ones) or make your own for a fraction of the cost.

Wearing ear plugs is as stupid as having earbuds in.

So, not really that stupid? I don't wear either, but I can't hear a damned thing when I'm at cruising speed on the bike. I just keep my head on a swivel, ride in a predictable manner, and trust that anyone passing me will do it safely.

I also had the occasional loss of hearing. I assumed.... it was somehow sinus related due to cold weather bicycling. After I loss hearing (in one ear) for about 3 days or so I called my doctor. The wind and weather may have played a part... but it was merely a wax build-up. The nurse removed what I thought was huge ugly hunk of wax and my hearing returned. Then.... as directed by the doctor.... I bought the $5 ear-wax removal kit. I couldn't believe the crap that was in there.

I lost a lot of hear in my fraternity day, the fraternity was the Marine Corps. LOL I now wear hearing aids, but not cycling. The big thing by not wearing them cycling is tennitis that is a constant ringing in my ears.

I normally ride with an ear bud in my right ear to listen to my cycling app and to catch a phone call every once in a while. I leave my left ear open to listen for traffic and sounds from my bicycle. It is the left ear that i am having trouble with. I guess it is the wind noise. I will see what the cat ears do for me when I receive them.

I don't notice any significant wind noise unless the helmet straps are oriented improperly and cause turbulence. Have you considered it could be your helmet causing the problem?

Yeah. Maybe a different helmet as well. I've seen posts here from people saying some helmets are especially quiet.
