Help me resist wheel set temptation....
So this Black Friday has some pretty good wheelset deals. I know what common knowledge tells me but I know there are *some* new developments that may or may not make this year better than others.
Boyd's new hubs
More mfgrs going to deeper alloys and more aero shapes.
While I regularly get to witness local racers spar at high speeds (one on Mercury 50mm carbons and the other on cheapo RS-11's with similar results).....am I a fool for thinking I might make significant gains going from some cheap alloys to a nice alloy like an Altamont or some Dura Ace c35's???

You will not get significant performance gains.
That said, I do like a quality set of wheels. The Boyds with the free update to their new hubs would be very tempting for me if I didn't use PowerTap rear hubs. I have a set of the Boyd 44mm carbon clinchers -- they are true, tight, and rock solid. Coach Boyd builds a good wheel.

Whenever I get tempted to buy wheels (which happens disturbingly often, haha), I try to think of just how close the cost of a wheelset is to an entire bike. I'm generally more interested in something different, not marginal improvements in performance.
It has been said... there's little rational about the purchase of bike parts so I don't see any reason to not get them.

C35s are awesome wheels. I have a local friend from here in Ohio who melted a Mercury rear wheel doing a gran Fondo in San Diego this year descending.
