Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Giro Aeon VS Lazer Z1 VS Kask Protone

I am buying a new helmet, and I've narrowed it down to 3 choices;

- GiroAeon
- Lazer Z1
- Kask Protone

What are everyone's thoughts on the comparison of ventilation?

Ventilation is important, but I would go with the one that fits my head the best. Different brands have vastly different fits. Try them on at the store and then decide. A good fit is also important for safety.

My head likes Giro helmet shapes... so I would always buy that, even though another helmet might be lighter, better ventilated, etc.

I was in the same boat last month. Chose the Lazer because I have a goofy shaped head and everyone said Lazer's Rollsys system does a good job of fitting heads like mine. They were right. I love mine. I had a Giro before and even though it was a great helmet, it just didn't fit my head right. I highly suggest you try some on just to see what brand fits your dome better. Bring sunglasses too because Ive heard Kask can have problems with long armed sunglasses like Oakleys.

I would try to try it out and see which one fits better. different helmet fits differently, even within the same brand. I got a Giro Aeon. Its oh-so-light. It's very noticeable when I switch from my road helmet to my Giro MTB helmet.

But the Aeon will get ding and dent if you blow too hard on it. Its light but it seems to get small ding and dent quite a bit easier than my Giro MTB helmet.

And talk to LBS, and just say, "I do want to buy from you guys, but I find the same helmet online for $xxx. its hard to argue with money. (show them the print out or from the phone) but if you can match their price, then i would definitely buy from you guys"

I was in the same boat between the Giro Aeon and Kask Protone. I tried both for about a week of regular riding and found the Protone fit my head better. Both had excellent ventilation so it was down to the fit and the Protone won.

There are definitely different helmets for different heads. I had a great deal on a Lazer but never liked the way it fit. Giro, same thing. I just have a Specialized head.

Ditto. Kask, Giro, POC, Lazer - I wanted one of them to work, but none did, so back to Specialized.

I have an Aeon and like it. I've had it for 2 years now and it is super light and almost disappears on my head, except for the dents in leaves on my bald head. I also have a Specialized Prevail 2 and it's as light as the Aeon and more comfortable.

I own 2 out of the 3 (Protone & Z1), both a great helmets but if you want pure ventilation the Z1 has more. The Z1 also has more wind noise because of that.

You cant go wrong with either of the two, no personal experience with the aeon

my kask protone is the best fitting helmet i ever had. probably due to my tallish pointyish head.

but also the suspension system is great and pulls down behind the ears for a very secure fit.

I agree - probably one of the best I've ever tried. One thing I don't like is when the straps come out of the little slots in those rear retention pieces.

oh. But I had to go on glasses trying expedition to finally find a pair that the suspension system behind the ear didn't knock the glasses down my nose.

POC ended up working well, and look good too. Damn expensive tho.

with the right kind of binding, a head can be made to fit any helmet.

This!

At any given price point, most of the major manufacturers can produce a test that shows their particular helmet to be more aero or have more ventilation than their competition. Similarly, when you go to the races, you'll see each brand well represented. This should tell you that most of the helmets are pretty comparable, so the primary differences will be subjective (fit, appearance) and price.
