Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

College, screw the bike. After you graduate you'll have all the money you want.

Post this on the Road Bike Racing subforum to this one too - they are the ones who do.

Oh, and pay attention to these answers. Lots of good info on what to be/not to be like when you get older.

Just get a Madone SL 5.9 or a Specialized Tarmac S-Works. Both are solid race bikes and you should be able to find support and parts for both bikes throughout the U.S. If you get something unique, you may be waiting for a while on a repair or spare part.

Budget for a full bike, two wheel sets, a spare frame (don't buy the spare frame, just have $$$ in reserve), and some emergency cash for post crash parts replacements.

Excellent point - you may want a set of aero wheels (like Zipp 404s) and non aero wheels. That can cut $1500 out of the overall budget right there.

exactly. i'd buy a $3k bike and another wheel set. especially if you're training with this bike as well.

That's a pretty erronous statement. I bought my bike in Italy. No problems getting things fixed or getting spare parts or whatever. Getting a bike made in the USA just because everyone has parts is no reason to get a bike.

assuming the post is legit...

if you were 15, racing on a national level, and had a sponser willing to give you 5k to race a bike, i would say go for it. afterall, it's not his money. if it wasn't a sponsership and this was just out of pocket money, then i'd agree with you.

+1

Budget well, and you can have a great bike with an extra set of wheels, and cash to spare for a replacement frame and repairs.

Good luck and have fun!

+1 for dropping ~3.5-4k on the bike, and get a good second wheelset.

Unless - is this straight up cash for any bike supplies you need? Because it would make more sense (since you're only 15, and still have lots of growing), to spend a little less on the frame, use the money for better wheels, or a dimpled jersey, or an awesome TT helmet.

Get yourself and Orbea Orca. Super comfortable for the long races (conserves energy for the final miles), stiff enough to sprint (for the final 200meters) and light enough to climb (Basque country is hilly... to be expected by a bike from there...)

If you can't afford to go with Dura-Ace or Record, stick with Campy as Chorus is a bit nicer than Ultegra (personal opinion only, others may disagree... and I do ride Ultegra...)

where did he go?

Anywho, I would have to agree with the go a little cheaper on the frame/bike and get some other wheels. There rally isnt the "best" bike, although I could be biased adn tell you that you should go out and buy a de rosa (I heart de rosas) but it should be something that you, YOURSELF get to get on and go for a ride longer than around the parking lot. Your at a very high racing level, you should know this already. Also look into Cannondale's I have heard that they are very solid bikes.

Now wait a sec... You ahve a 5500, whats wrong with it? is it breaking? If it is get your self a new bike! So you can then have one bike to train on, and one to race on

I'd find the Lightest, Stiffest bike out there for 5000. I'd look at possibly a Madone SL 5.9, which is what I am currently riding. Or a Cervelo R2.5, maybe a carbon Soloist?

Well, this year at the Road Nationals @ Park City, Utah I did in fact see a guy riding a 5500. So it is probably "legit".

The only way you'll know what bike you really want is to visit an LBS and test ride dozens of em. Or if you wan't a short cut, you could always e-mail Lance Armstrong for advice.

Why does'nt your sponsor get you a coach who can guide you into deciding what you need to race?...

i quite like the unique brands and more quality brands than the other brands that everyone else has. they are also the brands that i have ridden and quite like... although i rode them with other equiptment that i wouldnt have on my bike, but they still felt good.
the other thing i like about them is they come as a frame and i can put whatever components i want on them.

But, if you or your parents have the scratch, then get a Madone / Orca / TCR / Advanced / CR1 / Synapse / Vortex / Extralight / Axiom / Tete.

But don't get a steel frame, they suck. (Asbestos underwear - check).
Dont forget bikes like calfees line includeing the bamboo. Frames from them could suck up your 5k buget on their own but you could go with the lower priced ones and build up one hell of a bike.
If i get a good enough job to build a bike based on one of their frames pref the bamboo with in 18 months from time i start saving till build day im getting one.

Thats one more reason why im personaly going to do what some would say is dumb and upgrade my t400 to the max i can. So i have a extreamly nice bike built around the old 1987 t400 frame. Buy the new frame only and transplant the high end parts to the new frame.

If you got a 5k budget you may want to consider lower end custom frame soemthign in 1k or so range then build around that and have something unique. Once you have your parts list and frame picked out take the remaining money and use it for a custom paint job.
