Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bag Balm vs other products.

I picked up a can of Bag Balm at my pharmacy a while back. Normally I use Finish Line's Butt'r, but I've tried the Bag Balm a few times.

What are it's advantages and disadvantages?

Does anyone else have issues with using a product originally designed for cows' udders inside their shorts?

Before I started riding I was at a friends house and he had a jar of this in his bathroom, I thought it was hair gel and applied it to my hair-big mistake, anyway, I use it and it's always solved any problems as well as being about the only thing in road biking that is not expensive, I always wash it off well, also in warm weather, I sleep in the buff, it helps a lot. I think if you use any cream for too long your skin will be to soft, so I only use it when I need it.

Bag balm is used by tons of parents for daiper rash, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I find it to be too greasy and hard to wash off - I'm happier with Chamois Butt'r

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, try their Udderly Smooth Udder Creme.

Bag balm is amazing stuff and I even have grown to sort of like the smell. I used to use it pre-ride and apply directly to my nether-regions but a huge problem is that if you accidentially get it on fabric it stains pretty badly and cleaners do not get it out well. For that reason I have purchased a bottle of nashbar chamois cream and it works fine. Then again I have only ever had mild saddle sore problem and never when using protection.

The important ingredient is Lanolin. You can use anything that's mostly lanolin.

Lanolin from pharmacies is generally expensive.
Bag Balm and A & D Ointment by the tub is generally really cheap and super effective.

I have used Bag Balm for a couple of years AFTER rides if I felt saddle sores coming on, or was chaffed. I haven't ridden with anything on my chamois for about 10 years. Just too much hassle and I don't seem to need it.

It seems to speed my recovery when needed. 1 tin has lasted the whole time, and I still haven't put a dent in it.

I can't help saying, "MOOOOOO" when applying it though....

I use Assos chamois lube before rides, and when chafed, use Bag Balm after I shower for a day or two. This keeps the chafing to a minimum and speeds the healing process dramatically for me.

I use Vaseline before the ride and then apply Bag Balm after the ride if there are any problems. If you put it on a sore spot before you go to bed it is usually gone by the morning.

I generally use bag balm on the rides and a zinc oxide compound (aka diaper rash ointment) post ride. I used to never get saddle sores, but about 2 months ago, I got caught in a downpour and the chamois got wet along with my nether regions and it just flared up. Since that time, I'm finding I'm more prone to saddle sores/diaper rash than I used to be.

As an aside, I went over to my folks last night for a BBQ with the wifey. They regaled her with tales of my baby-hood and how prone I was to diaper rash. Coincidence? I don't think so.
