Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

pretty amazing power from a single-stroke air gun

though it is unlikely a kid had a powerful airgun. all cocked versions lubed with oil
will have pretty high velocities
It's true that spring airs are cocked with one stroke, but I'm not sure many 12-14 year olds could cock something like my Webley. And certainly not fast enough to get a follow up shot on an object moving 27 mph. It's hard to do...really takes some effort.

https://www.beeman.com/kodiak.htm

Ummm..they don't explode the oil in the air unless someone has over-oiled the mechanism and/or there is no pellet to slow things down. Without a pellet, these things will sound like a .22 and can even begin dieseling (piston gets pumping back and forth)..very rare occurance on a well maintained rifle.

I had a beeman 1000fps air rifle when I was 14, and I had no problem cocking the thing. I was also not stupid enough to point it at other people.

"Hey kid, you'll shoot your eye out!"
Had to say that. That little bastard needs an a$$ whoopin! Then his pellet gun should be bent into a pretzel while he watches. Better yet, whip his a$$ while the gun is bent!

Who cares how powerful it was, my Daisey Red Rider could put out an eye, or cause you to fall from the bike at a high speed. I would have called the cops, and told them he shot at me with a gun. Air, or not makes no difference.

Ask the cops how they feel about giving free passes to anyone who levels a gun like that on another person.

Heck, I just saw a field mouse get chopped in half with a paintball marker. There're supposedly set at 275 fps but since it was woods ball, I think we were all running a little hot. The paintballs are .68 cal...

+1. Stupid kids who shoot people with pellet guns are more likely to grow up to be stupid adults who shoot people with real guns.

I'm an avid airgun shooter, and I have a Winchester break-barrel rifle that will shoot 1000fps. It sounds to me like the kid probobly used a lever action BB gun like a Daisy Red Ryder. I've been shot by one of those at point blank range, and it stings like hell, but it didn't break the skin. It could potentially be nasty getting shot with one on a bike, though.

Hmmm?
I dont know the op's situation, but i have an idea, it may have been one of those 'airsoft' guns (plastic/aluminum bb's) or some such gun with the floresent orange tip.

also, as far as i know of, many such guns can be shot and the cocking action will chamber another round or the gun can be rotated so a round falls into the chamber.

I do agree the kid should get some sort of punishment though regardless of the gun-- at the very least confiscate the gun and give him a fine or something...
hope they find him, he needs to be taught a lesson.

If it was a Red Rider or similar, you just fire, cock and fire again...BBs live in a tube in mass quantities and are reloaded automagically.

Very true, my old .22cal Sheridan pellt rifle could shoot through a 2-liter bottle, and still have enough force to almost punch through a license plate. If that hit someone on the head, bike helmet or not, it would be fatal.

Pellet rifles have similar stopping power to a .22LR (long rifle) cartridge at short ranges. This makes them very dangerous.

To me, this is nothing short of attempted murder. I would have called the cops immediately, and if they did not take it seriously, would see how I would go about filing a claim against the PD for dereliction of duty.

A BB gun on the other had would be criminal assault...those lack the stopping power and velocity to be fatal. BBs do not deform or fragment upon penetration like a Pellet can, plus BBs do not have as tight a seal against the inside of the barrel as a pellet does (this is why pellets hit harder, there is less wasted air pressure in a pellet gun, so the round is moving at a higher velocity upon leaving the barrel).

Either way, the police in your area need to take this VERY seriously. Next time it could be a member of his family

That kid shouldn't be surprised when someone decides to shoot back, you can't tell if someone is using a pellet gun for sure from 100 yards away.

I still say an old fashioned trip to the woodshed a$$ whoopin and break his little BB? Pellet? something another gun up in pieces, preferably over his narrow smart a$$ and kick him in the a$$ all the way home like John Cleese does Manuel in Fawlty Towers! Now, if some DSS or other social worker disagrees with my diagnosis, then let me shoot at your a$$ with a BB.....or pellet rifle and see how they may like it.

Point being................since we no longer whip kids for wrong doing, we get these little bastards who will next cut the heads of cats with lawn mowers and then they kidnap and **** your kids and torture them someday! Okay, maybe I over addressed this but he needs his a$$ beat so bad his nose bleeds as my dad use to say.

Someone familiar with guns wouldn't have any trouble telling a pellet gun from a firearm at a distance, based on sound. As for the two shots, kids can be amazingly fast with their pellet guns.

man..a lot of people know trivial info about pellet guns.

No doubt Mr. Junior NRA has a daddy with a big gun. Any kid who shoots anything at a person needs psychiatry.

So, it is the position of you two that the way you raise non-violent children is by beating them to teach them that violence is wrong?

They didn't say anything about teaching them to be non-violent - they said they were teaching children to be responsible.

Hmmm?
It was probably one of those lever action Daisy Red Rider BB guns and he's just calling it a pellet gun. And those you can fire off a couple shots in relatively quick succession. Those won't do much except sting but "...you'll shoot your eye out kid!".
