Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the appropriate setup? It seems, from all the pics on here, that the (invisible) line from the top of bar to the hoods should be almost perfectly parallel to the ground. Is that right?
Generally, the top part of your bars should be parallel to the stem, if you're looking at the bike in profile. Look at my girl's set-up. Not everyone does it this way though, some stems angle up a tad, and often the tops of the bars don't continue in the same angle. It's usually most comfortable to have the part of the hoods where you rest your hands to be level or mildly cradling your hands towards you. If you can't reach the levers from the drops, you can get a shim that will push the brake levers in. Just ask your LBS.

here's my current workhorse. A Colnago Dream Lux. Turn the cranks and it happens at the back wheel - very little BB movement - very stiff.

Sweet ride. Isnt that 07 Veloce? How do the Khamsins feel? They seem to be wheels that are value for money, and they come with killer looks as a plus too. Do they go out of true easily?

Thanks. Yep, '07 Veloce, Ultegra pedals (the Campy pedals were too expensive), Forge Ahead 3T stem, Miche Supertype seatpost, Imron paint. The Khamsins have been great so far. I just got the bike and I only have a few miles on it, so I don't know about them going out of true but will let you know. I wanted regular 36 spoke wheels, but these were more affordable.

Good choice with the Veloce. The shifting will feel clunky at first, as with my Centaur, but after a while its going to break in and then it'll feel like butter.

I always felt that a classic steel frame should be paired up with 36 spoke wheels, but then I saw your ride's setup and overall it wasn't that bad at all with low spoke count wheels. In fact the color scheme came together very nicely indeed, with the red frame and the black components in a nice combination.

I suppose you could ride the crap out of the Khamsins first, while you can save up some green to splash out on a nice set of custom 36 spoke wheels.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to many years on this bike. The story of how and why I got it is kind of long, but basically I rode someone's Torelli Gran Sasso about a year ago and realized that I must have one. They aren't importing the Gran Sasso anymore and the Corsa was the next most comparable one my price range (about 2k). I was going to gather the parts a la carte from ebay, etc., but the shop where I got the bike put a package together for me for less. Very happy with how it worked out.

my god, that thing will blind someone! It took me a second to readjust after scrolling to it..that thing on the road might teach some of those rednecks to keep their eyes on the road and not the cyclist they are staring at and probably yelling at.

My bike is a mid 90's Simoncini. I found the frame used in a LBS and put a Campy veloce triple on it in '96. I added the Mavic wheels last year when my rear wheel could no longer be trued. An oldy but a goodie - columbus XLS tubeset. Been thinking though about a new Pinarello F4:13 though, I skipped the Titanium bug but these coke bottle bikes are soo light.

By the way - Italian bikes should be red and it is my experience that red bikes are at least 1mph faster...

That's not a dork disk, that's a mini aero disk. That's why it goes 1mph faster. Color has nothing to do with it.

Besides, it looks cool like that. Now if it was clear.... that would be a different story!

Dork disk - never heard that before. Sure glad I took the pink streamers off the bars before I snapped the pic - couldn't imagine what I would have heard then...
