Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am 6'0 ...so I mean to people of similar height more than a 130lb 5'4" guy...that seems well proportioned.

The weight sucks someitmes i guess, but the excess power of having literally 50 lbs of muscle mass seems nice at other times (carrying shingles, moving heavy fruniture, putting up fence, etc...) clearly for riding the watt per kg is almighty, but for everyday work i feel like being super small must be a hinderance. my fiance runs about 5'0" and 110 (beauty and the beast ) and i find i need to help her do tons of stuff.

everyone under 155 or so... you look like great cyclists, but in complete honesty i would never want to be that small. You look kinda weak at things other than riding a bike, but i guess that is what you need to do to be good at the biking bit.
at 142 ibs I might be small but that is the same weight give or take when I was winning karate competitions so looking weak is obviously deceptive

Been riding for close to 20 years. In that time I went from 165 to 228 back to 179. I carry more weight better than most. Most never guess my weight correctly.

I will be 165 again. Doing it the slow way. Couldn't get any lower without changing diet seriously. Still not a perfect diet, but tons better. I just don't beat myself up for "cheating".

Once I hit 165 I am sure I will want to hit 160 or 155. It never ends.

One thing is for sure. If I hit my weight goals without losing power I will be kick-ass.

at the beginning of 2006, probably around 235-240 as far as i remember. last summer around this time i was around 165, now i'm 175/180 with some upper body/core workouts. so it's all good and i feel great.

with the amount of cycling and running i have a hard time keeping it on.

5'8" at highest 190 im around 175 now. Can still run 2 miles in 13:30, 76 push ups in 2 min, and 86 situps in 2 min. Cycling is quite a bit more fun than running for my day job...easier on my knees too.

I think I'm a mutant. When all I did was play video games, smoke cigarettes and eat fast food I weighed 170. After a few years of vigorous cycling, a healthy diet and some gym time, I weigh 203. I'm 5'11. wtf

The more I ride, the heavier I get.

Me too! Started cycling seriously I was 129 and could barely make it up those Vermont hills. I got strong but also hungrier and heavier at 140. Had kids here in NM and not so much cycling, sedentary job actually started drinking some wine/beer socially. Went as much as as 167. Got back to yoga and hit 138-140. Now cycling really hard since September (added more to commuting and started weekend rides and lunch rides) and I got heavier again - WTF. Now I have a sabbatical break I am cycling 2 hours in the AM for 3 whole weeks and I am at 153 today. I am 5'6.5" .

July 1984 - Beginning of Basic Training - 150 lbs
September 1984 - End of Basic Training - 165 lbs
March 1985 - End of Tech School - 210 lbs (midnight chow)
March 1988 - Left Germany after three year tour - 240 lbs (schnitzel and canneloni and loads of beersss)
September 2005 - After a year of 45 mile RT commute and better diet - 195 lbs

Sitting at 6'1" and 200 now. I'd feel frail if I were at the doc-recommended 180.

Last year (350ish) I lost 25 prior to that shot.

About a month ago after a road race. I'm around 265 right now, I'm loosing the fat but gaining muscle so the scale is not my friend.

Ride on.

267 to sub 200 in a little over a year... 2800 miles for the year so far, (shoulda been 3k but July has been weird) and the key for me is not what I eat so much as how much and when.. I eat 5-6 times a day and the portions are smaller than the mass qty's I used to consume..

5'8", 42 yo. I went from approximately 203-205 down to 172 in six months. I have then maintained not going over 176 in the seven months since then. I have gotten down as low as 168 (and even 165 due to water loss after a five hour ride, which is cool to see even if I gain it all back in a matter of hours of rehydration and food) but this low 170s seems to be my comfortable zone at the moment. I wouldn't mind losing more but my doctor is happy and that's what counts in the long run. As a reference, I played my senior year of high school football at 165.

Biking makes me so hungry and carb craving that I gained weight and it's not muscle.

140-->224-->cycling-->195
5'9" 19yo weighed 140 very fit. peaked at 224 last year 38yo. down to 195 now but terrible diet has me plateaued. Gaining weight in the summer - the commute to work isn't as hard as winter or its easier to grab fast food. I thought I would be happy dropping to 200 when I started cyclung but have decided to attain a certain fitness level instead of weight.

Before cycling, around 12 years old and 20 pounds heavier and about 6 inches shorter hahahahah

About 2 months ago, still about 10 pounds away from an ideal weight for the hills around here. I'm too fat for this sport haha

5'8" 210 lbs in 2006, now still 5'8" but at 170lbs looking for 160. Serious life style changes, less eating, more riding + divorce. I am happier in all ways now.

This thread is GREAT motivation! I am a newb, I wrestled and played sports my whole life. I played fball in HS at about 160 and wrestled 140 w/ about 5.5% body fat. After my senior wrestling season, I quickly shot up to 160ish. Through college and staying semi active I was about 175. I had 3 knee surgeries during that period on my left knee starting my junior yr in HS. Then on Dec. 26 2006 I tore my other knee up really bad while wrestling with a HS kd (I coach). This one has really made it impossible for me to run, play softball, or wrestle anymore. So, about a month ago, I bought a road bike.

I am currently 26yo, 5'10", and apparently 195 lbs. I dont think I look like I weight that much, but so says the scales. I guess I will have to check back in with after pictures later. So far- I don't know what I have lost any weight, but I am building some muscle back up in my legs (which my knees desperately need) and I think I have lost an inchish in my waste, jeans are feeling a little better. Like others though, riding makes me soo hungry, I feel like I am eating more to curb the hunger. I think my goal is to be a more fit 170-175.

Me and the new fiance from March in St Maarten:

I'm 6'2" I went from 180 lbs to 168 lbs. Only 12 lbs but visually the difference is amazing. I have almost zero body fat, 31" waist, and lots of muscle. I did lift weights for about two years too, so I'm sure that's helped with the upper body strength.

I was 316 lbs several years ago, and have slowly taken it off. I'm about 5'11 and 195 now. My legs are on the powerful side now. I was a very successful wrestler and football player. I've been racing, and am trying to move up the ranks. Realistically, I need to be 20 lbs of fat lighter to get where I want to be. The unfortunate part is that I have lots of extra skin (I will spare everyone the pics). It is frustrating because I will never look how I want to look, even though I can win a race here or there. The other frustrating part is no matter how fast you get, there is always someone faster.
