Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

upgrading groupo

i have a trek 1000 and am a college student and want to keep this bike for a while and do some minor things to it. What would be a good group set to go to? Ultegra? if so, how do I got about getting this equipment, i dont know which stuff fits.

its all ****. its not even 105. im on campus now so i dont remember exactly whats on it, but i think its tiagra and one other thing lower than 105. but i mean, i need to have at least 105 on it and if im gonna do that i might as well go to full ultegra or 105/ultegra mix.

i started with a new trek 1000 back in 2005. spring of 2006 i slapped 105 group on it. summer of 2006 i sold it and purchased a giant tcr c2 (full carbon fiber) rig. do what you want, but if you get hooked on cycling you likely will upgrade the entire bike sooner, rather then later. later.

again whats wrong with it? does the chain keep sliping off, does it mis-shift, does the brifter not work, is there a crack somewhere or do you want a 10speed so you can go faster? tiagra and sora are functional, they work and will keep on working just fine with minor adjustments every now and then.

If it doesn't move the chain left and right when you shift then change it.

105 is fine.

as of now, nothing is wrong with it. The front der. is a little noisy depending in which gear i'm in, but thats about all. It was mis-shifting but i got it fixed by a friend. I want to change shifters and what not, because any other bike I'll purchase in the future will have the little finger trigger. I just want to make shifting a little smoother and braking a little quicker. The noise from the front der. kills me when I'm riding. Switching gears is a little slow too, so I would like to speed that up.

Hooray for socialism! Oh wait...

Save your money for beer and racing. no need to upgrade anything that works. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Make it a goal to ride so much you wear your components out. Then you can upgrade your worn out components, AND be fast!

I've RACED and WON on everything from sora to dura ace. The main difference between components is weight. If you set everything up correctly, or find someone who can, there will be minimal mechanical advantage to the higher tier groups.

It took me a few years and a few grand to realize this. It's a good lesson that most people (especially those new to the sport) don't want to hear.

If money's no object, buy what you want. The above statement applies to those with limited funds.

Signed,

A poor college student

Ride what you have until it detonates. The main difference is weight and durability, so use up what you have and get something that will last later.

If you have the Sora shifters (this, with the side trigger) instead of Tiagra (this) then I could see replacing them. Apart from the shifters, go for a tuneup at your bike shop and the bad shifting should be fixed.

I have and race a '06 Trek 1000 w/ a Sora/Tiagra mix. IMO, you should wait and replace the whole bike at some point. In the meantime, get the derailleurs tuned by someone who knows what they're doing. Best upgrades on this bike are saddle, brake pads, & new tires.

Thats exactly what I was talking about. I want new shifters, but with new shifters do I need to switch everything over to a 9 speed?

I have the Trek 1000 and hated the Sora thumb downshifters so here is what I did since I'm on a budget. I found set of 9 speed Tiagra brifters on Craigslist that were in real good shape, as good as mine. The RD on the bike is already 9 speed Tiagra. I put it together and ride it as an 8 speed until the Cassette gets more worn and then I will switch to a 9 speed cassette and chain. I sold my Sora brifters on Craigslist for the same amount that I bought the Tiagra for so it was a zero cost upgrade. That made the bike shift better but the best thing I did was get rid of the stock Alex wheelset. I bought Mavic Aksiums for the bike and it rides like a dream. Sure it's no carbon fiber dura-ace bike, and I'm sure if I rode one there is a world of difference, but it is my first road bike and I love it. I'm holding out for a Cervelo P2. Good luck luck with you bike.

This helps me out the most, thanks man. I agree with the wheelset, I upgraded to a set of Easton ec70's. I think those are the wheels. I def. need a new saddle though cause this one blows! My ass hurts in no time at all.

How many miles do you have on the bike recently? No saddle will help if you don't have time in the saddle.

And I see you're in NC, which college would that be?

I go to ECU. I'm just gonna assume you go to State?

A saddle will help my butt on my rides, I have the stock saddle which, idk if you've ridden on it, but it sucks!

buy the SRAM rival group and then when you are ready to buy a new bike, just get a frame and move the parts over.
