Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As some others have mentioned your info was stolen. Chances are that the little purchase was just a test to see if you notice. Cancel the card, and probably do a credit report check.

Nashbar plainly states in their "security" policy that they may share information INCLUDING your credit card number, I literally just read it. I have sent them my two cents about it...and will not be a customer of them or any of their affiliates.....ever.

A prosecuting attorney represents the state in criminal matters (i.e. fraud, assault, murders, etc.). A defense attorney is hired by the defendant (or appointed by the state if the defendant can't afford to hire one on his own) , and the prosecuting attorney tries to get a conviction against the accused.

They also plainly state this:

We occasionally have third party agents, subsidiaries, affiliates and joint ventures that perform functions on our behalf. They have access to personal information needed to perform their functions, and are contractually obligated to maintain the confidentiality and security of the data. They are restricted from using this data for other purposes, and in any way other than to provide the requested services to Nashbar.com, and may not alter or resell the data.
If you have good evidence that Nashbar or its third party affiliates are sharing or selling your credit card information, then by all means, go after them. I have serious doubts, though.

Represents the "state"? You mean, like, state of being?

If you replace "state" with "crown" you'd be close to describing some of the workings of the criminal justice system in Ontario, where the OP lives.

I Idon't know about Nashbar, but I do know about Reader's Digest, and I used to subscribe, but I stopped after I received an iunsolicited book in the mail, which was a come-on for their condensed books. Apparently, it contained a "Send this note unless you want to receive more books and be billed" note...

I didn't respond and received a bill. which I ignored, along with an overdue notice every month or so for about a year before they finally gave up.

I had a similar incident a while back, and also received an item in the mail that I did not order. But I understand the point of that is confirming the card is good for more money. So pronto, cancel that card and check what else was used on it.

If much of this was actually coming through Nashbar, I expect the credit card companies would have shut them down by now- they're the ones footing the bill for all this, not your or me or Nashbar.

I stopped ordering from Nashbar after they took three weeks to deliver an order of three in-stock items.

Remember that Nashbar is owned by Performance and both web sites use the same customer service center. If Nashbar is crooked, then Performance probably is, too.

IIRC Jenson is also in there too...but I'm only going off of an old memory. I know they picked up Access too, but then it just went away I think. FWIW, I've been getting stuff from Universal Cycles lately. They price match pretty much everyone, I've successfully used the price match function a few times, and it's very fast, like instant response to your email. Plus (and this is a BIG plus to me) they use paypal, which I trust waaaaaaaaay more than just using my CC.

Better check your credit report to see if this is noted on it.

I had sent an email to nashbar asking for some clarification, but the did not respond. So I just decided to put it out there to see if it's a common problem.

Nashbar has always sent stuff reliably and been ok with me, so I will probably continue to shop there. However, I like the suggestion that someone posted on a prepaid Visa to use. I am going to look into it.

As has been mentioned here in this thread before...it is not Nashbar, it's the payment processor that got hacked most likely. I t is the same issue that has been happening with the UK vendors too. These small purchases that show up to your door are "test" purchases to see if the card is still active, then they hit you with plane tickets and such.

I noticed the fraudulent transaction the same day it posted to my card but my Credit Union fixed it and issued me a new card (happened right after my last order with PBK). a week or so later, I got some manuals in the mail on how to do Ebay auctions.

Use the one time use card numbers and that'll minimize the chance of it happening again. Even Paypal offers that these days...

No test purchases on my credit card. They went for $983 and sent it to themselves via Western Union. My bank flagged it and called me. Not sure if the crooks got their money.

Will not use nashbar or performance even though I like the products I've purchased from them.

Surely nashbar is aware of this problem. Will they be able to fix the negative impact on their business?

Regardless of how the information made it into the hands of the "crooks" the frequency of these problems related to one merchant amongst a relatively small number of people would seem to be statistically very interesting.

Nashbar/Performance won't be getting my business either. There are better merchants out there anyway.

Maybe it was a man in the middle attack where your CC # was taken. Maybe your computer has a trojan and the number was compromised that way. Maybe you bought lunch at a local restaurant and their processing got compromised.

Dont do this

My computer is a virgin so it doesnt use trojans. The CC that was used was one that my wife and I have set aside for our "hobbies".....and wasnt used in over a month.
Sorry....but it was directly from nashbar's lack of security.

Except that with all the other threads from other people recently about ordering something from Nashbar then getting charges on their credit card that they didn't make make it less of a "jump to conclusions" situation and more of a "someone is definitely getting credit cards numbers used to buy stuff from nashbar" situation.

No one here knows how it's happened - the most plausible explanation is that they or whoever processes their credit cards for them got hacked. But other possibilities aren't impossible.

Or the CC processing companies. I suggest that you read up on how CC info is stolen before you make any more wild accusations.
