Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think everyone is missing the point. I don't think we should give a rats arse at what point in the transaction the info was stolen and by whom. It's just patently obvious, for whatever reason, that using a CC with Nashbar is risky. Doesn't matter why. There's just too many reports of this happening with a single merchant among a statistically tiny group of people. If Nashbar uses a crappy CC processor who is getting hacked, they shouldn't. It still reflects on Nashbar.

Wow, I too have had recent fraudulent charges on both my credit cards. One card a little over a month ago and my second card this past weekend. I haven't used the second card in almost a year and neither card leave my wallet and statements are kept safe or shredded. Only vulnerable place is online use. I'm freaked out but am a little relieved that I'm not the only one.

Apparently a major company that handles credit card processing was compromised. Two of my credit cards, a Visa and a Mastercard/Discover, are being replaced byt the banks. The banks initiated this action as a security measure. One of my banks said it affected over 800,000 of its customers (or maybe it was 800,000 people overall). They told me the name of the company but I forget who it was because I never heard of it, but apparently they are a major company in the cc industry.

One card being replaced is a corporate credit card for work, the other a personal credit card. They said it doesn't mean MY card was used fraudulently, but my info was amongst the large number of accounts whose info was compromised from the security breach.

Its possible this is the source of some people's problems. I think unless someone has verification that a specific vendor was hacked or their info misused from this company, it is irresponsible to be making accusations using a company's name. You could be wrongfully harming their business.

Thanks Sherlock Holmes.....

I guess everyone else is making "wild accusations" too....

Perhaps you should help us all to "understand" how credit card companies work...maybe you could even start a thread to properly educate the inferior intellects.

No, it has nothing to do with Nashbar. It happens with every retailer that uses the same processing companies. The only damn reason it seems like it is happening with Nashbar more than others is because PEOPLE HERE BUY BIKE GEAR. That's why it would seem to be tiny group of people. What about all the BS threads about this same **** happening with PBK, Ribble, Wiggle, etc.?

I've done literally hundreds and hundreds of online CC transactions for computer equipment for my clients (personal card) over the last 12 years including dozens of international purchases. Why is it I've never had a single, and I mean single, instance of credit card fraud until I made orders to Nashbar and PBK about a week apart. The fraud charges showed up about three weeks later. That's just way too coincidental. And given the number of similar complaints here I don't think you can assume it's merely ancedotal.

It's not a question of how many transactions but of when the transaction was placed and with which processing company.

Dude you really need to read that article about the Heartland incident. There have also been other processors with breaches as well since then. You cannot blame the stores where your make your purchases. They have to go through a processor and there is a limited amount. These processor breaches are really on the rise this year. Nothing you can do. I have had my check card replaced twice and my credit card replaced once from credit card companies themselves after the breach becomes known. Some credit cards are taking a proactive approach and replacing them before something happens others are just waiting for something to happen and then reissue.

There is something you can do..... choose not to buy online. Its simple. Sorry Nashbar and however.
Force their hand to get a better service. I'll pay the extra "x" amount to support my LBS....and I'll pay cash.

LOL....you go ahead and pay with cash the rest of your life because that is what you will have to do. It is not limited to online transactions. Heartland was the processor for a lot of chain restaurants.

I stopped ordering from Performance when they closed my local store, so I have good no way to deal with defective products.

+1 for LBS, I've seen the light... and the light is good.

this is happening way to often....many companies including Paypal(which I'm now using) now offer one time usage cc numbers....it's the only way I'm making cc purchases online, and I suggest everyone else look into these as well....you can use these numbers with any retailer that accepts cc payments...they don't have to accept Paypal.
