Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need Help with Purchase

I would like to get into cycling a bit but as a newbie and I need some help with a bike that I found on Craigslist.

The bike is a Giant OCR 3 - seller thinks it is a 2007 bike and the color is black/blue (don't know if this helps).

My question is how do I know it is the right size for me? The seller says he is 5' 9" to 5' 10" and I am about 5' 8 1/2".

I had done a online measurement from - https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...LCULATOR_INTRO - which gave me the following:

Competitive Fit

Seat tube range c-c 55.1 - 55.6
Seat tube range c-t 56.8 - 57.3
Top tube length 52.2 - 52.6
Stem Length 10.2 - 10.8
BB-Saddle Position 78.1 - 80.1
Saddle-Handlebar 49.5 - 50.1
Saddle Setback 4.8 - 5.2

Eddy Fit

56.3 - 56.8
58.0 - 58.5
52.2 - 52.6
9.1 - 9.7
77.3 - 79.3
50.3 - 50.9
6.0 - 6.4

French Fit

58.0 - 58.5
59.7 - 60.2
53.4 - 53.8
9.3 - 9.9
75.6 - 77.6
52.0 - 52.6
5.5 - 5.9

Seeing how I am a bit knew I don't quite know how to interpret all of this as well as some of you experienced riders and don't want to get the wrong fit.

Most of the bike shops around here don't want to fit me unless I buy from them and if I don't but from them they charge quite a bit!

I would really appreciate it if I could get some help on this subject as soon as possible!

I just got off the phone with the seller and he said the bike is 22 inches from the center of the pedal to the seat heat with would be 55.9 cm.

If he has done the measurement correctly, that's probably a Giant large, and they say it's too big.

I'm 5'6" and I ride a small size OCR. I have a buddy who's 5'9" and he rides a medium. I'd say you're a medium.

How do you measure correctly?

Do I go from the middle of the crank to the bottom of the center bar or is that wrong?

There. The top tube is important; your CC measures for TT are between 52.2 and 53.8 so that would be a small frame.

By the way, if it fits you properly, that's is a nice bike (I had one).

Measurement

To make sure he had measured it correctly; where should he have taken his measurements from?

The OCR is a compact-geometry frame. Measuring the BB to seat height really tells you nothing about the size. That number will vary depending on how much seatpost is showing. The size of the bike is on the frame somewhere, the seller just needs to look for it. If he can provide the size, compare your fit measurements with the geometry on Giant's website for the frame size. Random measurements from the seller aren't very helpful.

Oh, and +1 on it being a good bike. If it fits, and the price is right, you won't be disappointed.

Thank you so much for your help.

Upon further review it looks as if this might be a 2006 OCR 3 and not a 2007.
I found this link that is a close match to what the bike looks like - https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...+x05&Type=bike

So with that said are there any differences that I should know about and are there any reasons that I should say forget it and keep on looking?

Does anyone know the differences between a 2006 OCR 3 and a 2007 or 2008 OCR 3?

8 speed on the 06 vs 9 on the newer, the 08 has 2200 shifters... 06 and 07 is sora...

Everything else is really the same.... And um.. well... I don't know what your budget or use of this bike really are... but I would lean away from sora, and just plain stay away from 2200... This is like dept store bike territory.

I don't have a lot of money to spend that is why I am looking at this used bike at the moment.

Is it ok to start with or should I pass?

How much do you have to spend? Your budget and the asking price for this bike would go a long way in helping the discussion out.

I can get this bike for $350 so I really don't want to spend more than $500-600 tops!

Please help explain this to a newbie:

How do you translate this:

To this:

Competitive Fit
Seat tube range c-c 55.1 - 55.6
Seat tube range c-t 56.8 - 57.3
Top tube length 52.2 - 52.6
Stem Length 10.2 - 10.8
BB-Saddle Position 78.1 - 80.1
Saddle-Handlebar 49.5 - 50.1
Saddle Setback 4.8 - 5.2

As somebody already mentioned, the seat tube measurement (A in the chart) that you got from the competitive cyclist calculator is based on traditional frames with the top tube (D in the chart), horizontal and parallel to the ground.

It does not apply to "compact geometry" frames such as Giant's, that have the top tube inclined (see diagram in the chart). These frames (compact) usually have a longer portion of the seat post showing (out of the seat tube), than the "traditional geometry" frames.

The diagram shows an horizontal measure (D) for the top tube which you obtained from the fit calculator. They gave 3 different fits (explained at the competitive cyclist site) and in your case the measurement ranges between 52.2 and 53.8.
In the chart, the top tube within that range corresponds to a S frame.

There is a detailed explanation at the Competitive Cyclist site (that should have been part of your report).

looks like you have long legs and short arms/torso. go by the top tube measurement when you shop for a frame. it's easier to raise the seat post than it is to shorten reach (IMO).
