Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Re: Bibs - FINE. You win!

I swore I wouldn't wear/didn't need bibs. I've been perfectly happy with shorts, but then when I needed a new pair, I decided to see what all the fuss was about, so I ordered a pair of Avanti Pro's from Velowear. I felt like a total dork putting them on, and then I went for a nice 40 mile ride yesterday.

Oh. My. God.

Ok, fine. You win. They are the most comfortable thing I own. I used to think I needed a new saddle - I was wrong. I was just wearing the wrong gear. I was stunned at the difference. Makes me wish I hadn't ordered the Performance Elite shorts I got a couple of months ago. I don't think I can turn back.

I'll be ordering another pair soon, I suspect.

So, thanks, you bib freaks.

Now try some of the mid level or high end bibs. You will be spoiled for life.
My wallet is dreading me ever trying Assos.
Sugoi RS Flex bibs keep my wallet happy.

I'd never heard of bib shorts until about 2 months ago when I got back into riding. Thought they looked different, but my friend at the LBS recommended them. Never been sorry I got them, and guess I'll get some better ones when these wear out. Still can't get over paying so much for lycra though, but guess it's worth it.

The shorts are good for indoors on a trainer. I also tend to prefer them when I'm wearing unpadded bib tights for winter rides.

Got a pair of the $60 Performance bibs a few weeks ago. Haven't touched a pair of shorts since. Probably about time I wash them and/or get a second pair.

Can anybody tell me by experience how do the Hammer Bergamo bibs ($80) compare to the Hammer Voler bibs($50)? Of course there is the Sugoi RS ($110) everybody keeps saying almost as good as the Assos. Any word of advice?

thanks

get them at the end of the year when Competitive puts them on clearance. Then they are only mid priced ~$160 or so. 2 for the price of one...that's what I did.

Haven't got the Hammers but Sugoi RS are even better than Assos IMHO. Best bibs I own.

Maybe this is an ignorant question, but why would bibs be significantly more comfortable than shorts?

Doesn't it likely have more to do with a difference in quality between the two brands? Bibs just have suspenders to hold them up and no string / pressure around the waist area... aren't those the only differences really?

I'm not saying one or the other is better, but just don't see how the difference can be mind-blowing.

I don't get it . . . this has NOT been my experience.

Waistbands have never bothered me anywhere near how shoulder straps bother me.

the shoulder straps keep everything nice and snug like it should be. A waistband just can't do the same.

Nope, haven't tried bibs yet. I'm not claiming one or the other is better. Shorts work just fine for me though. I'm just saying that I don't understand how the difference between the two can be life-altering, as some seem to suggest.

This was my line of thinking until.................. then it was all over. I felt the same way with shorts. Granted I had never tried bibs. For me it's so much nicer. I guess you don't know what your missing if you haven't tried it. Life altering... nope. Mo better... yep.
