Congratulations. I was hoping my first 200K would be in a couple weeks, but my legs just aren't up to it yet.

I agree with Machka. Brevets and longer events are generally timed events and not looked upon as races.
It you versus the ride. Finished or DNF.

It's also a timed event but not a race ... so the riders that came in after you also came in first. There are only two "places" on a brevet ... Finished and Did Not Finish.

Additionally, technically speaking on this event I sprinted over the last roller less than 50 meters from the finish and the other two riders conceded that I got the best of them that day. And yes we all knew we were sprinting over the last roller. I then let up and waited for them and we rolled in together for the same time out of respect for their efforts in a 3 man break since we had worked together for so long.

Looks like you need a new heart rate monitor. Those numbers can't be right.

The heart rate monitor is part of the Power Tap. For some reason I was having trouble acquiring a heart that day. I don't train by heart rate nor race by heart rate but I thought it would be interesting to see the data compared to my power. Interestingly enough I used the same strap the next day for a 2 hour recovery ride and it worked beautifully. I will change the battery in the strap before my next event on Feb 6, --300km brevet with about 13,000 feet of gain.

Sounds like a great ride. I got my first brevet in on Jan. 2nd. It probably had about 860' of climbing, took me 10 hours, and I felt good about that. One of the other local riders has been able to make it to the closing controls of some of these rides before the control opened, but I don't foresee that in my future.

Nice work Vireo.
To me you are not an average randonneur. I always expect old steel bikes with brooks saddles and matching saddle bags, kendall mint cake and luminous trouser clips

I know you're kidding since a 1.46 mile or 2 min36 sec descent would surely bring up the average speed over a 122 miles 7 hour effort.

Daytrip, I still work in a bike shop but I manage one now. It is 5.5 miles from my house instead of 69 miles like the last place. Why did I commute so far to work in a bike shop? Well I used to live in that town with my ex and my son. We split and I kept working at that shop because my son's school, mom and grandma lived in that town AND I had 50% custody. The downside to the career change is I see my son less but we'll work around that.
My mileage is down but I am focusing on more quality and less quantity. I end up doing a lot of group rides that are fast but with all the drafting I'm getting spoiled. So I get on the front and pull so I can get a work out. I get dropped daily but that's fine since I'm after a different training effort than the others in the group. I don't care to go blazing fast for 30 miles I want to go fast for 300 miles
My new shop is Bike Religion in Newport Beach. If you are an Orange County BF member come see.

That was such a nice ride. I managed 9:40. I made an effort not to hurry and being more social than usual, plus a flat and a missed turn, added up. I'd say the weather curse of the last few years might be broken. If the rest of the events go as well as this, I'd say 2010 is going to be my best year of cycling yet.

You and Brandy are both good writers, so I was thinking maybe some facet of cycling journalism (the kind you get paid for). Good luck at the new job--I'm sure you'll make up for the lost miles in other ways, as you said.
