Good reason to wear a base layer

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ouch, sorry to hear that, man! Heal well!

That cliff bar moving away into the distance was a good shot...classic!

Wow, that doesn't look fun. Looks like that guy that got hit was just riding and not part of your ride, unless he was and was just going extremely slow compared to the rest of the pack but highly doubtful. Haha, ya that clif bar wrapper was pretty funny.

That sucks. Does it help prevent any road rash? How's the frame?

I've never raced before, so please excuse my ignorance in asking this question: why was that dude going so slow? Was that a race or a group ride?

I'm sure umd will clear it up, but it seems like they were catching a breakaway and the guy being caught didn't stay to one side of the road to avoid just such a situation.

That was an amazing video, umd. Since we already knew what was going to happen, it had such an impending doom atmosphere. Please explain why the guy was going to slow.

thanks for sharing

He was part of the ride, he had just led out the sprint. I was just hanging out near the middle, not sprinting, but people going all over the road split the rider coming back instead of staying in the lane. I couldn't see him, and I almost avoided it, but not quite.

Looks like he lead out the sprint and when he peeled off the front he went down the middle of the peloton instead of peeling off to the ride of the lane.

It wasn't the middle of the peleton, it's just that people went into the oncoming traffic lane so they could sprint for 30th place or whatever. I got essentially pushed into the other lane when the guy in green cut his way in. He had to have seen the rider ahead, and then he abruptly cut around. It probably would have been better if the leadout guy had gone down the right side, but I don't think he did anything wrong. People back where I was should not be sprinting.

ANYWAY, the point of the thread was that a base layer helps protect from abrasions.

You didn't actually pick up that Cliff Bar wrapper as it blew past you and stick it back into your back pocket did you???

*edit* Heal up. And what brand of base layer provided the protection?

Don't know about base layers, but that's a good reason not to crash!

Yeah, I'm thinking it's better to just not run into people in front of you.

You didn't post the pic to the totalled Aluminum bike. That was impressive.

I'm wondering how many high speed wrecks have happened at that exact same spot now. I've witnessed at least two myself.

Guess you should ditch the helmet then.

I did pick it up, along with several other bits and pieces that came off me, my bike, and others.

Think it was a Specialized "technical layer"

More than I would like to admit. Probably seen 3 or 4.

I really wear them for comfort, but protection is obviously an added bonus.

Makes it pretty clear. Like a helmet, but for your skin. Great vid, but sorry about the frame though. Have you thought about what you will replace it with yet?
