sram shifter downshifting question
the only groupset i've ever ridden is Shimano, i know when you're downshifting and you run out of gears the lever will not move.
for a sram group what happens when you're on your biggest cassete cog and you still try to downshift (as i often do when i'm doing hills) since you're using the same lever that upshifts, does it come to a stop? when you un-depress the lever does that mean you subsequently upshift?
thanks for the details, i'm currently considering a rival group to replace my tiagra triple and am wondering about the logistics

Ahhh, I have been wondering the same thing as well. I read a thread somewhere the other day that said it wouldn't stop, thanks for clearing that up GoSharks.

from my friends: they say on their rival, sometimes this doesn't happen & they end up shifting up a cog
from personal experience with my sram red: when you on your largest cog & shift down, the shifter paddle moves a bit, but then you hear a weird click. after that, all the tension in the inner cable is released and the shifter doesnt move. fwiw, since the downshift throw is larger than the upshift throw, i don't usually release the paddle when i hear just any clicking. Also, i keep a good eye on cadence have have figured that my speed (usually around 11mph on my 34x23) is about 115% of the cadence, and my speed on the 34x25 is usually around 9mph while the cadence is probably 87rpm. so i know when not to downshift.

It's an adjustment issue. If you have the limit screw and tension wrong it may not be able to pull far enough to get that second weird click that cancels the shift. I have a hard time keeping my rival setup adjusted so that I consistently get that click, but I have extenuating crappy wheel circumstances.
