Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

202 for Seattle-to-Portland

Anyone have any tips for keeping mentally sane during such long rides? After 16 hours (with breaks) I almost wanted to jump in the ocean.

Better than riding through corn fields!

71 Miles on and old Trek MTB 820. Prior to that was 48 miles on the same old Trek. Not bad for an old guy that just started riding three months prior and weighed over 300. I hope go do a 150 or 200 this summer providing I have enough daylight. Not the fastest guy in the block so it may bs a challenge.

165 miles
Team Time Trial from Mt. Pleasant to Mackinaw
It was called the Big Mack Attack (before the hamburger chain had the Big Mac)

Rode a Ciocc that was more set up for criteriums. no TT bars.

Did a 24-hour thing once: 221 miles. Never again.

88 miles on my CAAD9. Really wanted the 100 miles but absolutely just died at around 80 miles. I literally was pedaling a stroke and then resting a stroke. I didn't set out to do that many miles and wasn't prepared.

Definitely want the 100 miles this year and will do it.

270 miles, 6,000 ft elevation, 24 hours.

Hey it's easy if you ride all day and night and have a nice breakfast 14 hours in. At the time I had a known knee injury and it started hurting at 80 miles. By the end I could still pedal but unclipping was VERY painful and I could barely walk on that left leg. Hopped alot.

That's what I said after my first century (100 miles).

Then ... starting three years later ... I went on to do 150 more centuries or longer rides ... and counting ...

140 miles back in the old days when my brother and I rode to Vermont from CT. Shouldn't have had that beer at lunch, but it wore off after a bit.

About a half dozen double centuries, including STP - 206 miles - 3 times. When I was 14, I once rode 8 miles. Once.

127 miles on the hottest day in WI last year, 95 degrees and 90% humidity, on a Look 566. The dried sweat on my bibs made the black change to grey. The up side is that I did the ride w/ my 30 yo son and it was in SW WI which is beautiful in the summer.

Last year I started out with no plan and around the 25 mile mark decided to head toward brothers house which is 50 miles away.
I went a little further and then headed back and ended up with 125 miles. Went back a different route to mix it up.
I did several 100 milers too.

125 miles, on a Cannondale aluminum. I rode from the Penn State main campus to Bucknell University and back, solo.

256 miles. Although, technically, the last two hours of that were after midnight and on the "next" day. That was a 400k randonneuring ride. I've done a couple of 300k rides (190 miles or so) and a 600k ride, which included 225 miles the first day and the rest on the following day. This was all on my Raleigh Sojourn.

My previous bike was a Worksman single-speed cruiser. I did several century rides and a 130-mile brevet on it.

+1 on not as many as Machka

OP - well done, keep it up.

I've done a few 200+km rides

Memorably long was 320km solo. Dublin to Mallow. Perfect summers day. Legs that didn't complain.

Later realised it was 199 miles, so no 200 for me I'm sure I could have pulled an extra mile.

110 miles on a charity ride.

If I would use common sense I could ride centuries more often but I tend to ride too hard in the beginning then run out of gas and it's the Bataan Death March for the last 30 or so miles. I realize if I put more miles into my legs it would get easier but it's been hard to find the time.

102 miles last year. Mostly solo as it was the Tour de Cure and I rode most of alone. A month later, rode the route again with a small group. I would like to do some longer distances but we will see what happens this year.
