Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Those are little vials of EPO

Seriously though, I think someone has already mentioned that those are barrel adjusters for the front and rear derailleurs.

No, those are barrel adjusters to take up (or release) cable tension. In mountain bikes, the barrels are right on the brake/shifters.

The trim is a feature that Shimano offers where you can "push" the front derailleur shifter and move the derailleur a little bit to the left or right to prevent chain rub. In old friction shifters you could move the front derailleur cage by "trimming" the shifter. (I know, this is not a very clear explanation. I will try to find a better description.)

I would have gone Campy, but it was out of my price range I agree with you, I think that the silver Ultegra looks better but the 2012 model comes with the dark version.

Not enough Celeste?

I know I know...should have gone Campy, but my CFO is already besides herself with the fact that I now own 4 bikes. So discretion (Ultegra in this case) was the better part of valor.

Ciao (and thanks)

To others, "yes", those white and black thingies are cable adjusters. My lady's 2011 model, one-month old Ultegra Infinito also has those, exactly the same. Shop told us to not mess with them unless we knew exactly what we were doing.

On the 7900, my 7900 bike has in-line cable adjusters, (a different style than this 2012 Infinito), but have not ever needed to use them because the drivetrain works perfectly. I even swapped the 53/39 with a 50/34, just lowered the FD slightly, and it still runs perfectly. Yeah, as you suggest, find a better mechanic.

Has the trim feature always been a Shimano thing with the latest groups? I have a 6700 FD with 5600 shifters and it also has the feature but now I am wondering if it's because of the derailleur or the shifters. I can't remember if it did that when I had the 5600 FD.

I'll try that...I'm a little worried though. I'm usually pretty good about doing these adjustments myself, always did it successfully on all my other bikes and drivetrains. The problem is that if you run through the cassette once it all seems fine. It's more like one time out of 30 I'll miss-shift, or something won't work right in the front shifting. I'm wondering if it something is out of alignment or if there's a problem with the chainrings or something. My shop is busy and won't concern themselves with those hard to track down problems. Which is especially frustrating as it's been an issue since I bought the bike last year. So I don't want to have to pay for it but I think I'll have to find another shop and do just that.

Man! I'm still in limbo with this road bike thing! Really really jealous having to see another new Infinito owner. I really thought I was gonna get mine earlier this year. DAMN!!! So is the 2012 more expensive than the 2011? It doesn't look like there are any changes. From 2010 to 2011 was a $200 jump due to the wheelset change of F7 to F5. Do you know if the Ultegra comes in Red/Black/White for 2012? I'm really hoping I'd be able to get one by this year. Ultegra or 105, it doesn't really matter at this point... I'm at a point to where I just wanna say "screw it and just charge it!" But that would be unwise. I really can buy a bike if I really want to... I'm just not too keen paying for it in a form of a credit card. Finance charge is finance charge and it's not worth it once everything is paid off. And too bad none of the LBS that carry Bianchis in my area have a 12 month financing same as cash. I'm just gonna be patient on this one. I'll keep on riding my mtb until then...

Anyway, I'm in drool city right now!

A tip of the hat to ya for not wanting to purchase on credit. That is admirable. (Wish I had your discipline.)

Something to mull over ... CC still has some 2011 Infinito framesets. Probably the only place in the country that still has any, and it looks like they have pretty much all sizes. Just the Celeste/White color. Doesn't seem to have any red/white ones. Comes with the fork and a FSA integrated headset. No seatpost. Listed at $2400, which is MSRP, so no real bargain there.

I don't know where some of you are getting your information, but SRAM does have a FD trim feature. There are also low and high adjustment screws for both the FD and RD on both Shimano and SRAM systems. You adjust these screws on the FD to minimize chain rub. No need to "push" the derailleur over with your fingers.

Also, FYI, Shimano is much, much more finicky when it comes to rear derailleur adjustment. Because SRAM has a 1:1 cable pull ratio, you don't have to be quite as precise as you do with Shimano when you adjust the barrel adjuster on the RD. There is a larger sweet spot with SRAM, which makes for less troublesome rear shifting. However, when it comes to front chain ring shifting, it is exactly the opposite. Shimano has SRAM beat here in my opinion. SRAM's front shifting can be good, but it requires an awful lot of trial and error to get it right.

You don't know how much I go over thinking "should I or should I not..." I'm more of a roadie than an mtb'er. I was only forced to buy an mtb because it was a cheaper resolution and it's more flexible. I didn't know that the blood will start to boil once again after being in hiatus for about 20 years. This may sound ridiculous, but I've had nightmares buying a bike only to crash from a pothole full of finance charges. No joke! 3 times in the last year I've had 3 dreams. First was the Infinito, then the CR1SL, and the last one was just last week when I bought an R5 because I didn't win the S5 from the Tour de France contest. The funny thing about that dream was that the R5 came in Celeste! Then as I was going down on Quimby Rd from the Summit, I noticed the bike color and look changed to a Bianchi Olter Nero! Then as I was admiring the bike, I came across the exact same pothole and wasn't able to avoid it. I crashed, got up and checked the pothole. It was filled with billing statements full of finance charges. Then as I looked over to my bike, it changed to my mtb.

I'm telling you, I'm in bad shape...

Gundom66, I respect and admire your fiscal responsibility. If only our government would show the same kind of restrain...but I digress.

I sent you a PM with contact information for the LBS where I bought the bike. They might make you a deal on a bike you like, you might be surprised.

In the meantime, enjoy your mountain bike. I went nearly 23 years from the time that I bought my Bottecchia to the time I finally bought the Bianchi (I bought the Litespeed from my friend and he gave me a good deal...we are still friends ) In those 23 years my wife and I had 4 kids, sent all of them to college (well, two are still in college) and watched as my children-less friends bought all kinds of expensive toys, including boats, motorcycles, jetskis and nice bikes, while my money went to buy school supplies, school clothes, food for the family and mortgage payments. Now, after all those years of spending on the family and drooling over the bikes that I could not afford, I can finally give myself a little treat (I still cannot afford the $15K Colnago Ferrari bike ). The point is that even if all you can do now is drool, your time will eventually come.

Peace out!

I got the information from my riding buddy who bought a Pinarello FPQuattro with SRAM Force. Maybe I should call him and let him know he does not know how to shift gears in his own bike.

All I know is that everytime we go out for a ride all I hear from him is how much he dislikes the SRAM system and how he wishes he still had his old DuraAce 7700.

I don't own SRAM so I have nothing to on, just his comments. Based upon his complaining, however, I decided not to buy SRAM for my new bike.

Hmmm... I still haven't received the PM. I wonder if it takes some time. Anyway, I'm in the same boat as you were, except, I was out of a bike for nearly 20 years and just bought the mtb last year. 2 kids (13 and 9) so basically, all the funds are going to the 2 car loans, mortgage, kids... wife. Then like you were, I have to think of college. So if the lil' one is 9, a minimum of 13 more years (if all she's going for is a BS). I'll be 45 this year, so that makes me 58. Then the wife had already planned world travels once the lil one is out of high school. I hope all travel plans will be covered by the time college is over. 58... I hope I still have my legs and will still enjoy biking.

You probably should let him know that he doesn't know how to shift the gears on his own bike if he is telling you that SRAM doesn't have trim. Both of my bikes with SRAM have trim. Also, it's not the front deraiileurs that have the trim adjustment, it's the shifters. The deraiileurs only do what they are told to do.

Other than that, beautiful Bianchi.

The funny part is that is my wife

You're going to love the Infinito, it really rides like a dream. I remember the first time I road it after coming off an alu bike I thought I was hovering over the ground on a magic carpet.....didnt even feel real

That is your wife....and you spend time riding your bike?

My friend, let me explain to you about priorities.

BTW, are you going to do the Bianchi Gran Fondo, in Irvine, on October?
