Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

105 9 Speed to Ultegra 6700 advice

Hey all,

I have a 2008 trek 2.1 with a 9-speed 105 RD. The RD needs to be repalced (cage is toast...long story).

I'm thinking of upgrading to an ultegra 6700 but can't seem to get a straight answer on whether or not it will work. I've read a lot of threads of folks saying it should work, but haven't seen a report back from anyone who actually did the replacement.

Basically, i want to keep my 9 speed cassette and use the ultegra 6700. Is this a good idea or should i just replace with a 105?

Thanks!

I have both and prefer the 105.

If you were to go to Ultegra 6700 you'd need to change the shifters, cassette, and probably the chain too. 6700 is a 10 speed setup.

that's what I thought but a lot of what i've been reading has been folks saying: you just need to adjust the max travel and it should be fine since the index ratio is the same on 9 & 10 speeds

Yes, the 6700 rear derailleur will work with your existing 9-speed drivetrain.

Yes. But if you want to "upgrade" to 10 speed you will need new shifters (and cassette, obviously, and chain).

Are you talking about replacing just the rear derailleur? I think the 6700 rear derailleur should work fine with the 9-speed setup. But you should be able to score a 5500 or 6500-series for relatively cheap.

Here's one on e-bay.

I use a 6700 with a tiagra 9 sp set-up. I am in the process of converting the whole bike to 10sp ultegra, but in the short term, it works just fine.

I had a spoke break on my rear wheel of my 9 speed bike. It ended up catching between the chain and the tension pulley -twisted the RD around backwarks and irreparably bent the inner link on the parallelogram of the 7700 rear derailleur. Re-laced the wheel with new spokes where the chain gouged 'em, realigned the derailler hanger, and replaced the derailleur with a 7800 series 10 speed on an otherwise 9 speed setup. It is shifting as cleanly as before.

I'm sure an Ultegra 6700 10 speed RD will function just fine on a 9 speed 105 5500 setup. I'm not attracted to the aesthetic of 6700's flat black cages, but they are admittedly functional, durable, and lightweight.

I think the ratio of cable pull from the drailleur to derailleur movement remains the same (1.71?) between Shimano 8, 9 and 10 speeds (with the exception of Dura Ace 8 speed). SRAM uses a different ratio (1.39?) so you can't mix and match SRAM and Shimano shifters and derailleurs and get workable results.

Yes, the 6700 will work fine. That's what limit screws are for. Hell, right now I have a 9 speed bike with Tiagra brifters and Suntour Cyclone derailluers from 1979. Smooth as butter.
