Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Am I Fred?

I ride an entry level aluminum bike with carbon fork, upgraded to full 105 Group, upgraded wheels to Shimano 501, use Prologo Zero and upgraded stem/handlebar, stem is flat on the headset. I ride in the drops. I ride in all weather, snow, rain, cold, warm, hot. But I wear sneakers and don't use clip in pedals. I have no cycling clothing, no shorts and will likely never buy chamois cream.
- I also picked and chose the parts and installed and maintain my own bike, try to learn what I can. And I troll the 41.

Does that make me a Fred? Are you a Fred?

You're a Fred, not for what you ride or wear, but for asking.

Being Fred is confusing.

Someone who spent too much but can't ride. I'm neither, I ride and didn't spend much.

Someone who doesn't care about mishmash of old and new parts. All parts are new.

You are the most despicable of all crossbred troglodyte mutations -- half Fred, half poseur -- a steenkin' Froseur.

Hmm worse than a Fred. Maybe I should take pride in this. Also troglodyte always puts a smile on my face.

Also looking to upgrade frame to a Velocite Selene in the Spring, for a stiffer bike and more race geometry than sport/enduro. No plans for bike shorts or shoes.

Question 1: Yes.
Question 2: Yes. In my case there can be no doubt or confusion whatsoever -- I ride a flat-bar road bike. My Fredliness is self-evident.

You are someone who needs cycling shoes, pedals, and clothing.

As long as you are fast and/or don't care about being fast then, yes, you should be proud.

Definitely some Fred tendencies. To seal the deal, you need to add a helmet mirror, some lights, a big frame pump, and a big ass saddle bag.

Bento box would help as well.

you are someone who will quickly (eventually?) realize that cycling shoes/pedals/clothing are beneficial to cycling.

Well lights for safety. Front and rear, both of which I remove since already had one light stolen. And one small one back of helmet. And the saddle has some sort of clip system for a saddle bag, so will be getting one of those later with some cartridges and tubes.

For years I commuted on a Motobecane AL bike, carbon fork, Ultegra group (except crankset).
In normal clothes, sneakers and oooold toe clips.

I went on some rides with the stanford cycling team and tri team. Unplanned, so I would sometimes be wearing jeans. On a 30 mile ride with 3000' of climbing haha. Definitely looked (and felt) out of place!

Is your name Fred? Then yes, you're a Fred.

Is your name not Fred? Then it doesn't matter what you ride or wear, you're not a Fred because your name isn't Fred. Simple, really.
