I just picked on up. I believe its an outstanding device...but with a crappy display that is hard to read in shadowy light...like morning rides where the sun is low.

My only very minor complaint is that I wish there was an adjustable setting for how far in advance to warn about a turn. It usually alerts me at 0.15 miles before the turn. That's fine for solo riding but when I'm leading a group ride that's sometimes a bit of short notice to yell to everyone.

Yes, you can move them earlier but it's a ridewithgps subscription feature. Bikeroutetoaster will make a copy of each course point to a selected earlier distance (that feature is free). So, you get two notifications.
The mapping Garmins provide another/different notification at about 0.1 miles/500 feet before the turn (from a calculated route).
Course points are the only turn notifications available for the 500/510.

It's the bundle that has the speed / cadence sensor, heart rate monitor, out front mount and maps...

Well....
I sold and shipped my Edge 810 bundle yesterday.. Today my Edge 200 died a horrible death! It turns on, reboots and it's stuck in a reboot loop.. My plan was to use the Edge 200 until the Polar V650 is available.. I guess that's not going to happen..
My options are to buy a cheap computer to use until the V650 is available or (cringe) buy the Edge 1000..
I went to the Edge 1000 official Garmin forums and it does in fact look to be a complete disaster.. I called my favorite LBS and they do in fact have a 1000 in stock.. It's the non bundle version so *if* I get it, I'd need to order the sensors..

I am debating the Edge 1000 at the moment.. I really had my eye on the Polar V650 but the more I looked into this morning, the less excited I am about it...

I picked one up at my LBS (they only had the non bundle) and am heading out to ride now.. I will post my thoughts on it when I return.
I updated the firmware and paired it to my iPhone 5S.. Also made a few quick segments and sent them to the Edge 1000...
We will see.. Hope Garmin does not bite me in a rear again with buggy junk..

The Polar V650 is mostly equivalent to the Garmin Edge 500/510.
If you were unhappy with the 810, don't expect to be happy with the 1000.

I am off to ride with the 1000 now and will post more later.. I am doing a 36 mile route today so we will see how it goes..

It looks like the Garmin Edge 1000 comes pre-loaded with maps, is that correct?
With the 810 you have to buy the maps or go with one of the free map options?

So the main benefit of the 1000 is so you can have your ride interrupted by text messages. Irony would be getting hit by a car whose driver is texting. I'll wait for the Garmin 2000 where I'll be able to stream netflix.

i would stick with the 500. I have the 800 and it gives you maps which i seldom use and a few more metrics on the display. The display is not great in the sun and that supposedly is one of the key benefits of the new 1000 but at ~$600 it's not worth it to me. i think you're mostly paying for the ability to have your wife send you encouraging messages (ride faster honey) while you're in the middle of a race.

The 800/810 came with a separate microSD card. The Touring comes with the microSD card already installed.
It would be much easier/cheaper/faster for Garmin to provide the maps on microSD cards.
That way, they only have to produce on version of the unit for different locations.

The full North America maps are around 2 GB and can take 1+ hours to copy across USB. It's much faster to remove the microSD card (if that's where you are installing maps) and plug tgevcard into the PC.
That the 1000 has 2+ GB memory isn't anything I've heard about before.
