50 x 19 vs 34 x 13......ever stuck deciding whilst out riding???

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think this stuff might hit folks who have a broader variety of terrain. For example.....in So Cal, the 3 different groups I ride with are doing anything from ridiculous climbing, to moderate climbing, to gradual climbing, to rolling flats, to dead-flats and everything in between all of those variables.

Then, on Tuesdays we do crit practice & chase eachother at pretty high speeds in a 1.25 mile loop for about 45 minutes which is a whole 'nother animal entirely.

Combine that with the search for whatever combo will help keep you from getting dropped in such environments and you find yourself paying attention to what gears serve you well and what possible gear combos might help further.

Maybe not everybody's thing but for me, the pondering is also part of the fun of biking.

The climbs were fine on 39-26, but I don't like spinning uphill. The limiting factor was the 50 big ring on the descents.

I struggled on 6% on my 34-25, I changed to 34-28 and it feels better. Anything above 7% and I am out of the saddle.

I read about how much someone loves their 16 cog, and a bunch of folks chime in to agree strenuously as I scratch my head in bewilderment.

This is not a criticism, cause it takes all kinds. But I just ride without thinking about which gear I am in too much except when it gets too high or too low. And I leave it in the big ring until I run out of gears, at which point I switch to the small ring. So, no, I'm never stuck deciding between two gear combinations out on the road and can't even imagine myself in the shoes of someone who might be.
Knowing what gear combination you are using is not necessarily indicative of gear-headism. Suppose you find your current gear too high. You downshift. Now you find the gear a little low. Stuff happens. So you look down and make a mental note of where you are. When you get home, you look at the cassette and notice you were using the 19 and 17. And missing the 18. Now you know. Is that too technical a scenario? If you care, you might notice that downshifting to the small front ring will make one of the combinations with the existing cogs ride like that missing 18 and the large ring. Now you would know how to get the combo you really want under some circumstances. The more you know about your bike, the better your riding experience can be. All without ever being a nerd.

I'm with grolby on this one. Never really know what gear I'm in, unless it's one of the extremes on the cassette.

If the pedaling is comfortable, I stay in the gear I'm in. If the pedaling is too easy, I switch to a harder gear. If it's too hard, I switch to an easier gear - unless I don't have one. Then I stand up. Hope that helps.

Still, I like seeing the 50 x 17 cog alignment better than the 19 and as I said in this case, the 34 x 13 is definitely a more quiet combo than 50 x 19.
Assuming that a Cat 3 knows what he's doing is your first mistake.

Pick your favorite gear and go Single Speed. That way you will always be happy. And sore....
