Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I purchased a Viking Jetstream last summer... Similar sort of price range.. Just don't put the bike on it's side or you'll end up bending the cranks! Also, you're brake callipers will most likely end up being bent!

Assuming you're not troll, why didn't you go to one of the several LBS in Philly that sell quality used bikes that have been checked over instead of buying a piece of junk from Walmart? For $150 I am sure you could have gotten something better from somewhere like Via Bicycle or Fairmount Bicycles.

Which parts specifically do you mean? Personally, I doubt that the low end Shimano parts are that unreliable. Nor the brakes (normal Tektro low end brakes if I'm not mistaken).

I don't think there's a stone's throw difference between that bike and the cheaper Bikes Direct bikes.

They are standard bike parts, and replacements are inexpensive and easy to find on Amazon.

If he spent $50 that would surprise me. He specifically wanted a crappy looking bike so it would not be stolen.

I bet it works better than the Walmart bike.
Yeah. I addressed that option in another post. Off the top of my head I can think of three LBS in Philly where $150 could have gotten him a used "beater" for city riding that would have been better than the Walmart bike.

Perhaps he doesn't want to run errands on it and keep a CAAD8 locked up outside a store.

I am interested in hearing from the OP half a year to a year from now about how well this bike has held up. It's probably going to require disassembly and proper rebuild to be in the best condition for riding, but if taken care of and not ridden like Danny MacAskill would ride his bike, maybe it will be OK for intended purpose.

Okay, this bike has an aluminum frame and 21 speed. It looks like a good bike for the new rider. Good investment. I know that the LBS can't sell a bike a like this and make money, but it's decent bike.

Honestly its all about just going out there riding and enjoying yourself. A 150 dollar bike can provide just as much fun as a bike for 3k.

I personally picked up a cheap bike too to start off as I did not know if I will stick with it coming from mtb world. Amazon.com: Giordano Libero 1.6 Men's Road Bike-700c: Sports & Outdoors

Well I put over 700 miles on is and its still doing great and is keeping up fine with expensive bikes on local rides when riding with riders of similar level.

My guess if he is still riding he will upgrade in a year or so. But if you think that he spend the same amount on this bike that some people spend on a set of tires its a damn good deal.
