Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Understanding the value of a bike

I would have posted this in the market forum, but I don't have a button to create a new post in that forum. I have a friend that is looking to see her 2009 Trek 2.3 WSD Road Bike to my wife. Both ladies are wondering what a far market value might be on the bike today, considering it was a $1800 bike back in 2009. Does anyone have any insight into what a far price would be for it today?

Thanks for listing the condition and the full specs. We'll be along with an informed response shortly.

Really need details on condition.

Or, as Mr Spock would say:"Insufficient data."

Use the bike "blue book". Google should suffice to find it for you.

Blue book is a good start but local market and supply and demand etc play a part. I'm guessing a road bike for sale in the middle of winter in Cincinnati would not demand top dollar. Even in season it would probably sell for less than southern California where I am and definitely less than a really hot bike market like Portland, Vancouver, Bay Area etc. But yeah, pics and condition are a good start.

How good of a friend?

It's a bike that would likely sit on CL for quite a while at $500.00 in So Cal.

I learned after selling six bikes on CL in larger metro areas you have price attractively or they sit. With DC listings on Friday are 20 pages back by Sunday. To sell quickly the price must be an good deal.

Is she still going to your friend if you wife is unhappy with the bike? If you sell or trade it will she question your motives? Sometimes buying from friend or relative turns out to be a problem.
See if she will let your wife ride it for a week or two, if you wife loves it then talk price.
Check CL for similar bike prices or eBay in your area and settle on a price.

Is this the bike?:

2009 2.3 WSD - Bike Archive - Trek Bicycle

If so, and it's in good condition mechanically & aesthetically, I would think a fair price between friends would be around $500.

So, folks, it isn't actually a friend, it is a local auction. Here is the link: https://www.ebth.com/items/1791651-t...-wsd-road-bike

Is the correct size for my wife, the question is... We don't have a bid on it, how much would you bid on it? the auction is over in 90 minutes!

If you are POSITIVE it will fit her properly, it's worth around 500 bucks.

Well, my wife is 5'0", so from what I can tell, she needs a 47/48 bike and this is a 47. We have not sized her, nor have we seen the bike. Your thoughts?

I put in a bid of $538 and it went for $563, a bit too rich for my blood. Thanks everyone.

Retail x 0.5 x 0.9^age

So it halves when you wheel it out of the shop and then drops 10% each year.
