Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Barristers should be baristas first, teach 'em a little humanity.

It's alright. Just follow my lead this season in regard to taking it easy.

Which means you can't start until next month.

I do not like Starbuck's coffee.

I do not think a barista trying to engage with me in a substantive conversation on race will fix that... this sort of thing is better left to bar tenders and barbers.

I'm mainly there for the free Wi-Fi. The coffee's okay. The clerks aren't especially chatty.

Because Starbucks workers are push-button baristas and they needed something meaningful to occupy their time. Problem is, I'm not sure half of them know how to write.

Am I being too harsh with Starbucks? Oh, well...

Why is it coffee servers get a special name anyway?

Do they get paid more than regular waiters?

When it comes to Sbucks, I'm surprised that you don't use the acronym PBTC - Person Behind The Counter. That was the en vogue derisive (a handful of years ago, at least), don't know if it still is.

The story is this little dog became acutely paralyzed on Mon. People took it to their vet, who correctly recommended referral for emergency spinal surgery. Expensive, but a 90% chance of dog being fine. They couldn't afford it, so vet gave it the only medication that might make the dog better. It didn't get better.

The people finally scrape up enough $ to pay for the surgery, they borrowed from everyone they know who had any money to give them. We know nothing about any of this, they just show up unannounced in our ER.

By the time they show up, the dog is paralyzed but worse yet has lost the ability to feel her toes. The key to this is 'when did she lose feeling in her toes?' If it was >48 hrs ago, she has <5% chance of walking with immediate surgery. If it is <48hr hr ago, her chances are 50%. The people do not speak English, everything has to be translated for them. I'm not sure they 100% understand. But they sign the paperwork, plunk down their money and away we go. The quicker we can be with all this, the better, it saves the people lots of $ if we can get the dog diagnosed and the surgery completed during normal business hours.

CT scan shows a big disc herniation, surgery goes really well and I get in done in record time, I even make my 6pm train.

Today the little dog can feel her toes again. Which means now a 90% chance that she will return to walking normally or close to normally. So its not really my win. Either way, I would have been paid. Its just nice for this dog and these people, I felt pretty bad taking their money when I wasn't sure they really fully understood everything and when I was pretty sure this vet bill will cause financial hardship. Now it doesn't matter if they don't 100% understand because in all likelihood their little dog will be fine and there will be nothing really they need to understand.

Triple Thumbs Up!

Today I'm heading out to Durango to race the pedal bikes.

I've never been there before which is exciting, but man after California I am so friggin tired of driving. So it goes.

I've been staving off computer GAS for a while, but I've finally succumbed - bought a slightly larger, faster SSD for my computer so that I could put my current SSD in my wife's computer (which currently has one o' them clunky mechanicals).

Time to back-up both PCs and get underway...

Long way, but that's the price for a college race career! At least you're not racing up at the college in Leadville.

Have fun!
