If it has a standard Shimano 9-speed freehub (e.g. FH-5500,6500,7700, etc.) it should work fine. It will, however, require a 1mm spacer as the 10-speed cassette has slightly less width.

I've heard the same, but I am not sure why. The ST-6510 version is suppossed to use the same return spring as the DuraAce ST-7700 (Y-6BD 74000, Y-6BD 75000). Not sure about the earlier 6500/6501...
