Read a bit about the mafacs. They sound good but I think I'd rather stick with a new sidepull brake.

My rims are 700c so new brakes shouldn't be an issue. I can brake from the top of the hoods but as they are quite stiff I can't get much power so if I want to brake hard I have to change riding...

Vintage Peugeot Racer

I've recently picked up a rather nice peugeot racer that I'm using for short commute in London (about 3.5 miles each way). I reckon its from around 80s. It has 12 gears as rides really nicely.
