I have to wonder how much of that improvement is just feel. Modern brake setups feel firm but I honestly can't say I've ever had trouble with a single pivot weinmann 500.

I'd run 27" in a 700c frame just to fill in the clearances. But then I'm in the UK so it's easy to get well built ss/fixed alloy box section wheelsets.
