Anyone know anything about AMC?
We have an, I'll guess 60's, 'ladies' framed 3 speed AMC. Its a pretty plain bike, the only identifying marks are 'AMC' in various places. The hub says '333' 3 Speed Hub or something similar. The shifter is the grip. Has rim brakes. The most distinguishing feature is the front fender, which has a fancy chrome ridge somewhat reminiscent of 50's cars' hood ornaments.
Any ideas what it could be? We haven't found too much online so far. I'll try to remember to get a pic up this weekend.

maybe this should be a new thread, but I did find out a little bit about AMCs.
Yesterday we were riding around the neighborhood, looking for open houses to see whats shaking in the local housing market. Pedaling down a quiet street, there was an old looking bike parked in this guys front yard. He's using the front basket & pannier baskets as planters. Since he was outside, I yelled to him 'nice bike.' Well, one thing leads to another & he shows us his garage full of old hardware. I'd guess he has 50-75 bikes in there, from the 30s through the 60s.
Anyway, he'd heard of AMC and reports it as a department store brand, from either JC Penny or Woolworths.

Seriously, AMC does sound like a department store brand, and "333" was Shimano's low-end line in the early 1970s, when better Maeda/SunTour parts were denoted "888."

The AMC pictured in the link in post #5 looks to be built by Murray. I don't believe that JC Penney used that name for their bikes, don't know about Woolworth. I do remember my local Woolworth selling AMF bikes in the sixties, though.

I have one to. Mine is ladies but mine says custom racer on the chain guard. Someone told me that Amreican Motor Corp. made a bike?

That's pretty funny. When I saw the title, I was thinking Associated Motor Cycles, makers of Matchless, AJS, Norton, James and Francis Barnett. Figured they must have done bicycles, too, like Triumph and BSA, but that died as soon as Shimano '333' was mentioned.
