I cannot get drop handlebars since I have a double hernia in both my neck and my back and thus I need a very upright riding position
I've got a flat handlebar with bullhorns for climbing and an aerobar for the descents and that combination is sustainable for my back & neck.
I even passed a couple of nice roadbikes in the descent to Brakel, so aerodynamicly speaking it seems to work out well
As for the average speed: it was only a 8,4 mile trip after all, right?
As for the Belgian Tripel: I am a huge fan of quality beer (i live in belgium after all) and I tend to drink one to two special beers every evening after work.
Maybe I'm spoiled, but I never drink normal "lager" or "pils" ... almost only "tripel" or better

I rode only a couple miles each way today ( not 8+). Part of the ride was on the East Coast Bike Trail (not the Ronde). Turn around was at Franklin's brewpub in Hyattsville (not Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove). I averaged about 9 miles per hour, rough estimate (not 17+).

I had two Belgium (style) beers brewed onsite right here in Prince Georgia.

The first pint was Witty Twitty, a "Belgium-style wit beer"

That first beer you name there probably is a bit like "hoegaarden" ... I used to live quite close to the town Hoegaarden when I was young so I'm pretty used to witbier.
That second beer with honey sounds too sweet for my personal taste.

Today I rode my typical 3-miles-around-the-block-tour with my dog.
The tour takes me up and down a couple of hills and over some tracks through the fields.
I averaged 25km/h or about 15,5m/h, which is pretty fast for my dog

Rode 19 miles in the Spotsylvania Battlefield, ate lunch, then over to the Catherine Furnace Ruins for another 4.5 miles.

I pedaled 9 miles into enemy territory today. I found the enemy camp. I overheard them discussing plans to attack the Specialized plant. Something about too many Crosstrails... We gotta do something about that...

Well, this is my first post, but figured I would start with a bang!. My schwinn trailway hybrid took me to the hospital. Before I hear the shouts, NO, I wasn't wearing a helmet, which would have prevented the trip the to the ER. I have just stared biking in the last month or so, and have always been worried about cars... little did I know I needed to also worry about uneven pavement and the way in which I ride from one piece to another. I mean a 3/4 difference was the difference in a smooth ride and me cracking my head open on a planter just off the side walk. What an idiot I am!!!

I took off at 7:30a for a short ride and about 4mi in I find myself with blood gushing from just above my right eye. The only good part about the whole thing was that I was right across from the hospital and I walked over to the ER. Long story short.. about 1 1/2 later and 6 stitches, a blackeye in the making, all else is well.

Anyone recommend a good helmet

Glad to hear that you weren't more seriously hurt.
Go to your LBS and get fitted for a helmet, ask them to recommend a good one.
I spend a great deal of time with two friends, one of whom is a neurosurgeon and the other is the Medical Examiner.
Believe me, the helmet is your best investment.

On Saturday I finished one of my yearly goals - Rock Creek Trail end-to-end. Started in Arlington VA and rode Georgetown, DC to Rockville MD. 50 miles r/t.

I went into town and back, about 15 miles, just trying to stay in shape before getting back to university where the "real" rides are, hills and rivers and forests, it's sweet. Cars just tend to try to run you over here. I helped someone find the campgrounds, I think...

met a friend at the World Trade Center Path, rode up the west side greenway to the GW bridge, went over to jersey and came right back, then retraced our steps on the west side greenway to 132nd street where we stopped for some BBQ at Dinosaur BBQ. cut through the city to central park and then down through the village, back to the WTC path to head back home. 28 miles total.

Richard. Thanks. I think i will be getting "back on the saddle" shortly. i might take a couple mile ride after dinner, we to to wally world today and got me a Bell as well. I think it was 30.00, it wasn't the thrasher... can't remember the name right now. I have a rather larger head 7 5/8 hat, so I had to contend with that when looking. I looked at teh thrasher, but it was just a little too small to fit me well. I did like that blinking reflector though, thought that was a pretty good idea.

How long have you had the Trailway, and how do you like it. I was thinkning about a little bit smaller tires... but after my spill I think I will stick with the 38's that came on it.

Yea, sorry about that bike seat. I pulled it off an old specialized bike when the suspension seatpost came it, to test it out. I'm planning on putting the original seat back on... or maybe one of the Rocket V seats I have laying around. Nice seat, that one!

My hybrid took me on what will probably be our last real ride together as after I swap over the brakes tonight (I run moto style) she is going to go and spend some time with my friend on an extended test drive and am pretty sure he will decide to keep her.

He needs a really nice B bike and I already have a nice B bike, and a C bike, and a D bike... etc... etc... etc

I built a new touring bike and just built up a nice vintage road bike into what is a great townie and commuter so they will do what the Trek has been doing for years.

I just returned from a nighttime trip to Geraardsbergen.
On the way I averaged about 18,6 m/h for 7 miles, which was my new record
Once arrived, I tried to climb "De Muur" for the first time ever, but was too exhausted from the trip to succeed.
I refused to change to lower gears to get uphill and simply gave up ... that way "De Muur" still stays unconquered and mythical to me, which I like better.
On the trip back home, still feeling weakened, I averaged about 13,7 m/h

Just a 25 mile ride, to get use to riding in the HEAT!! We are going to try our first "multi-day" mini-tour next month and since today a working towards 90 F, thought I'd put in a few miles to remember what's it's like to be HOT! Also stopped at the LBS as we are helping at a "stop" for the "Starlight Spectacular", Night Ride on Saturday and my old CatEye halgon, single bulb light is "barely ok", when it comes to chasing away the darkness

Got a "3-led" CatEye headlight and it even pulse's, ah the wonder's of technology So with the new headlight a, Guppy blinker light (on the helmet), 2-different patterned tail light's and a "motorcycle reflective vest", I sure hope we can be SEEN and not run over on our way to the "Stop"!
