Setup your bike at night. Pump your tires. Lay out your kit. Go to bed on time. Drink LOTS of water before bed. This was the Native American's alarm clock to get up and go hunting.

Promise yourself some nice coffee and a croissant at a coffee shop that you find during the ride.

Understand that they guy you'll be racing later this summer is out riding right now.

That's not gonna work, I've only seen that show like once. I can relate to Peter fighting the chicken though....And for the record I have no problem with Leuky, just having a little fun.

Dear Carleton,

Do you use any supplements to help your body perform and stay in shape?

Also,

What exercises will help me cycle and run faster? Deadlifts and squats?

I use basic electrolyte drinks when I'm riding. I tend to cramp a lot on longer rides. Believe it or not, Rolaids (with calcium + magnesium) knocks those kinds of cramps out very quickly. But, you can also get calcium + magnesium pills without the antacid, too.

I sometimes take multivitamins when my diet is screwed up.

I'm not familiar with training to run.

Deadlift and squat will definitely help you on the bike, especially if you are interested in sprinting. Some road riders avoid the gym like the plague. But, I don't agree with that. The gym can help you create some baseline strength upon which any type of rider can build his training. You'd be amazed at how much work the glutes do for the pedal stroke. Many think all of the work is done with the quads. Both of those exercises train the glutes very well.

Dear Carleton,

Do you know any high level/truly awesome racers that don't measure their wattage/go to the gym/eat anything other than pizza?

I've been reading Dan Chabanov's tumblr lately and he seems to be becoming quite an accomplished racer while doing nothing but riding his bike and smoking weed.

Sounds like he's young. Youth + genetics can do that. When you get older you have to work harder and diet...then you wish that you'd worked harder when you were younger and you would have been even better.

Youth is wasted on the young.

Dear Carleton,

What is the purpose of fore/aft adjustment on your saddle? How can you tell if you've found a good position?

Also,

What is your favorite TV show and favorite movie?

The fore/aft affects the angle at which your leg applies pressure to the pedals. This also affects how open your hips are and how low or high your handlebars should be. It's sort of a big deal. A good bike fitter will tell you if you have a good position. Until then, there are lots of tutorials online. Search for: Road bike fitting

Favorite Show:
- Recently: Bob's Burgers
- All time: Simpsons

Movie:
- The Outsiders

I really want to put one of those motor bike kits on a road bike. Is this a bad idea?
