Openers today, Sea Otter crit tomorrow. NOT an A race, just looking for some fun in a practice race. It's only 30 minutes. It's a combined field (M 35+, 1,2,3,4) and it goes off at 4:40. Last year the field was small. I'll find out at registration today how many ladies are riding.

Hang in there as long as you can, Sara. National class M35+ races are a huge challenge for me. Don't be beating yourself up if you get pulled.

I looked at the Sea Otter website and Sara is registered as a Cat 4. There are 20 cat 4, 17 cat 3 and 7 masters 35+ women registered. The P/1/2 race at a different time but there are cat 2 women (and maybe a cat 1) in the 35+ field. The W4, W3 and Masters 35+ race together but are scored separately.

Thank you! But, I'm not concerned. This is a training race for me, I'm doing it for experience, more bike skills honing (it's a really technical course, ask Ex), and for fun. There is crappy hill right after the start that you go over, turn around, and go over again. It will hurt everyone! I'd like to see if I can get to the front and sneak around the the 180 a little better than other riders and have a first crack at the hill on the way back. If I can, cool. If not, well, if I'm still in the game on the second lap, I'll try again. The crit is 30 minutes, short, and I think I can mix it up for the whole race. We'll see. If not, no big woop.

Watching the crit races at Sea Otter last year told me that most of the fields were pretty well shattered by about the fourth lap. Riders were having trouble with the 180 degree tight turns at each end, and the hill was causing fits. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out in the women's field tomorrow!

Oh - you know I'm not worried about placement when my plan is to leave the training wheelset on the CAAD so Coach can get some good numbers. If I was serious, the tubies would already be on there!

Today's misadventure...

4.1 miles ru**i*g hill repeats for an elevation gain of 466'

We flew to Orange County yesterday and attended the 4PM racer session at Velo Sports Center. Roger Young is completely healed from his crash 6 weeks ago where he fractured his clavicle and broke 2 ribs. He had the collarbone plated.

We worked on motor drills that included a 3 person 16 lap team pursuit with Roger on the motor. The drill was to start the effort flying with the motor going last. We each took one lap pulls until the motor was on the front. Then, we were to exchange behind the motor for 5 laps and then the motor would pull off and we would finish the 4K. Well the woman in front of me gets on the motor and does not exchange. In fact, she stays on the motor for 5 laps. At first, I thought she just forgot to exchange but on the third lap, I screamed exchange but she paid no attention.

We talked after and she knew what to do but for some reason just did not do it. I see this a lot when racers are at the limit. I can do similar stuff. Since this was a drill, we just finished the effort and moved on to the next one. This is why we practice.

Racer Ex 

Had a myelogram today. Sucked up most of the day between the drive in, prep, paperwork, and recovery. Doc claimed the needles to numb me up were going to hurt but I didn't feel a thing. Supposed to keep my head above my back for 24 hours and take it easy for 48. No drinking for 24, apparently alkeyhaul and dye in your spine can give you a fierce headache.

No racing this weekend. Chest is clearing up so the antibiotics ssem to be working. I might ride again one day.

Had three different nurses comment on my low pulse rate. Sitting there without my shirt two of them commented that I was in really good shape. Then I looked around and figured they might be rating on the curve.

Glad to hear the exam went well Ex. Let's hope the outcome is better than expected.

I had had a similar experience this week. They commented on my low blood pressure and pulse. My eye surgery went fine. It still hurts a bit but I manage that with Aleve. It is sensitive to light, and the focus isn't quite there, but it's plenty good enough for riding today and racing tomorrow.
