Finally -- got a vintage MTB to convert for touring!
After years of watching Craigslist, I finally found the perfect base for a 26" touring build. Introducing my "new" 23" 1991 Schwinn High Plains. The bike looks like it was never ridden -- the teeth on the chainrings are still black. I spent $130, which is more than I usually pay for used bikes, but I feel this was well worth it, especially considering the cost of a comparable new bike like the Surly LHT.
Already have 25.4 WTB Dirt Drops, f&r racks (Sunlite G Tec), and some Axiom full coverage fenders. The drivetrain is mint, and the crankset is perfect with a 48t outer ring! I am seriously smiling ear to ear after riding this lugged beauty. It rides like a dream!

Good choice, have fun with the project! Whenever I look for a project for a family member, the first thing I look at after size is the condition of the paint/decals/and frame overall. Addressing problems in those areas tend to be expensive. So I would MUCH rather pay a touch more for perfect paint, than get a discount on a bike with frame/paint deficiencies. Enjoy it!

It was so frustrating -- I always seemed to either have money, but there were no bikes available, or I was broke and there were tons of bikes available. Finally, the stars aligned!

I'm interested if you will keep same brake set up, and if you go with drop bars, what lever's you would go with. I'm working on a Cimarron build with same frame size, 23" I purchased the frame, and, have been trying to work thru what components to use. Last week I had a High Sierra model ( 87 yr., 20" Fr.) come up on local CL,and purchased it but I plan to leave it as is, and not strip components. Will follow your progress on future posts.

Chris In Miami got drops put on his High Sierra with the stock Roller Cam brakes- he just used normal Tektro levers and said he had no problems.
I'm going to be using some "Schwinn Approved" Diacompe levers with turkey wings- I just got the front cable hanger a couple of weeks ago.
