Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Single speed recommendations needed

I'm currently looking for a singlespeed bike to handle my day-to-day commutes. My commute does contain some roller hills but those shouldn't be a problem.

Preferred specs:
> Rack & fender mounts.
> Steel frame construction.
> $500+/-
> Durable enough to haul loads and ride some occasional singletrack.

What manufactures make good singlespeeds? What bike would you recommend?

I had a Kilo WT until it was stolen a few years ago, and it was a very solid bike for around the $400 to $500 range. I replaced it with a used Bianchi San Jose, which I love.

I'd say check out the WT (or Nashbar's single speed cyclocross bike, which might be more suited to singletrack riding with some tweaks) if you're looking for a brand new single speed under $500 complete and need it immediately. If you have some time to be patient, check out ebay for a used Bianchi San Jose or Raleigh One Way. They do pop up from time to time for under $500.
