I have a Flak for riding in the winter and it works fine. No major complaints. Its not a perfect fit on my head and I have to always wear a hat of some sort under it to keep it from moving around too much. I got it because I wanted something that would be good at keeping my head warm for winter riding. It does just that. Aside from that it, it sits in my closet now waiting for colder weather because it is too hot to wear during the warmer riding season.
I rock my Flak in the summer and it does not bother me much..and I generaly sweat alot (picture Patrick Ewing @ the foul like). I am embaressed to say, I did not wear a helmet much in the winter. My head was so cold I needed my skully (maybe it"s Boston winters). Anyway, the Flak get's er' done.

for skate-like helmets, i choose bern. they've got more vents, have models with integrated brims, and have special beanie/earmuffs that fit right into the helmets for winter riding.
otherwise, if you want something more 'conventional' then i'd choose a catlike whisper. good luck finding 'em in the states though.

The Giro Hex is very cool and bmx looking but highly ventilated, and really cheap ($80ish). Since the L size fits my massive 24" head I am totally getting one next time i buy a helmet.

the logos on the bell faction are just stickers and you can peel them off fairly easily... I have one and it is great in the winter but not so much in the summer

Here's what I wear daily:
It'll run you about 100 bucks. Seems to be the best helmet I've owned thusfar. I wan't really know until it hits the ground first though.

Don't forget to pick up a set of dorky yellow reflective safety squares. I got a set from REI. They are painfully bright and reflect very well against car lights. Wear a helemet that can be seen and you are better off. In the day they also reflect very well. I can't remember the brand but they work incredibly well.

My friend had to return some stuff he bought for work Sports Authority, so I went with him and they happened to have the Bell Faction on sale for $25. The logos are, as lbthomps noted, just stickers. The only thing I was confused about was which size to get. I got the medium, and it certainly fits, but I think in winter it would be nice to have the larger size to fit your hat under right? Or can I just take off some of the padding, as the hat works as padding?
Anyways it's sweet and very hot pink! I'm going to color match my disc wheel to it.

If you really want protection get one of the new ice hockey helmets with gel padding etc, made for multiple impacts and to stop concussions. The bike companies haven't caught up on that yet. I'd wear my CCM if I didn't wear a visor on it.
I ditched my cheap road helmet for a Dave Mirra BMX number and it's much more protective. I always ride with a cap on underneath and that helps anything fit well.

No, the helmets we have today are fine. They're one hit and then replace. If you don't value your brain high enough to think it worth replacing helmets after a crash, then I feel sorry for you.

I have always wondered about the one hit and replace thing. Is that applicable to all helmets, or are there acceptions? My skate helmet has been slamed on the hood of a car and slamed to the concrete. Also, my roadie type helmet has flown out of the window of a moving car.
