Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Sweet, what frame is that?

Are you using that front derailleur as a chainguide? Probably isn't necessary as a singlespeed, but then I guess it can't hurt either.

yup. it definitely is superfluous with the ss tensioner i'm using, but i figured i could take it off if i want this to be a lockup bike, and it came with the frame so i figured i'd leave it on for bling for the moment.
besides, i hate dropping chains.

nope, it's singlespeed. i already have a geared cx frame so this is going to stay ss for ease of operation. i love one bys, but at this point i just want to ride the bike. it's a little big but i love how it rides, and other than standover i think it fits me just fine.

daylight full pics when i can get em. probably first thing in the morning

So far I've done all my races this season 1x9 and that's how my mountain bike is set up too. It's pretty great, but I've been wanting to try SS cross for a while. Also, this frame fits me better than my geared bike, I think. For cross/road bikes I'm developing a preference for slightly smaller frames and longer stems. I like being able to get the weight way over the front wheel sometimes, and the smaller frame is easier to "throw around." But everyone has their own preferences. Also, Majors are sweet! Enjoy it.

Sorry for cluttering this thread up with text.

Major Jakes are still cool. Is it runing a tensioner or an eno hub or...?

My buddy is getting a new Major One soon. Gonna finish off cx season on it then use it as his winter commuter. They're cool bikes.

Fleet update

My recently acquired '88 GT Karakoram K2 (yeah, the pic is not in focus). Single speed 48/18 using a half link. The wheels and Fat Boys are from my Crappy Tire MTB conversion, I have another wheelset with Kenda knobbies for winter. I'm not sure if I'll keep the frame as it is, remove the decals, or blast and powdercoat.

My '09 GutTerBall. Fixed 48/18. Lately the stem and bars were replaced with something more shiny, and the seat post was stripped of black paint and polished. The wheel blemish is my attempt to remove the finish to expose the aluminum. I think I'll repaint that spot and leave it be.

The drewed '74 Favorit with Nishiki crankset and stem, and saddle from the GutTerBall. Fixed 52/21. Folks here and locally say I should have grips, so I bought some 1" I.D. vinyl tubing. The brake levers wouldn't fit on a 1" bar, so a friend of mine who makes knives and matchlock guns in his spare time drilled out the clamps. I was able to take off the stem mounted nut catcher and now I have two brakes

Detail of the bars and a cheap bell, added for bling I have a set of Sakae MTP 126 pedals that I may restore, to replace the track pedals, clips and straps.

Lilcphoto... I think with the money you've spent on handlebars and other stuffs, you couldve bought a nice wheelset, prob like Phil laced to Mavic OP's.

So far everything has been from the local Co-Op or friends/trades.... I did buy the brake levers and ODI grips new, but they are transferable between bars.

As far as the wheelset goes, I am working on having my LBS lace up a set, but I have to find the right rims first...Probably end up with formula hubs...I don't ride enough for Phil's.

pretty sure its an older freewheel hub. if so, he would have to replace the hub.

Takhion pursuit frame... about 400 made, maybe 100 of them track, 100 of them pursuit and the rest road. This is a weird crossbreed, with the pursuit frame but standard threaded headset...

Fluted seatpost.

Fillet brazed fork.

Hmm... keep or not keep? If keep, how should I build it up without spending much more dough?

Paint is a silvergold... the pics tell the paint job quite nicely. REALLY bright. pics were taken on a rainy alameda afternoon..
