Um they deff had a pair of bolt cutters which could have been extended by pipes or they just are strong enough to carry ones that are really big. Next they saw that the guy whose bike mine was chained next too left (i chained it between a mailbox and another bike so it would be very hard to get too), and they probably flipped my bike upside down to get the chain on the floor. After that they just took those big ass bolt cutters and started hitting the shackle with all their might. I could have took them up to two or three minutes to brake it (chipping away at the metal) depending on how strong they are. There were things i could have done differently like, chained it to something high up so it would be very obvious that they were trying to steal it. Or i could have just left my bike at the company i worked for (i wasn't thinking i suppose). To be honest i didn't expect someone to brake that shackle like that, it's very popular in NYC like 40% of guys who ride bikes for work (food deliveries, etc.) who have chains use it so i thought it would be okay. All in all **** happens, someone could have just walked up to me and forced me off the bike (that has happened before to other people plenty of times). Such is life.

I don't know how it escaped my memory but I had an incident where I needed an American Lock cut and the NYFD couldn't break my American padlock with bolt cutters no matter how hard they tried. Instead they had to use an electric saw which of course did the job.

I also had someone try and break into my backyard years ago by sawing my American padlock and they must've given up since they didn't break in.

Even with these experiences with American padlocks, I'm gonna purchase an extra kryptonite.

Sorry to hear man. But honestly this is the same as with cars. Doesn't matter what neighborhood your in, how you locked it or who was around. If someone is determined to steal from you they will find a way around anything. Can't use a bike that expensive everyday if your going to be leaving it unattended frequently, that's the only solution

I feel like all these guys who say they bring the bike in with them wherever they go can't really enjoy it that much, because their so paranoid about it getting jacked all the time.

I mean when you think about it, a bike just big a metal toy that we use to get around, and yeah i did spend a lot on it; money comes and goes. I think i learned a lot from building it and will look forward to building an 'EVEN' better track bike in a year or so. I still have my other bike so it's not like i need a replacement bike or anything.

I was thinking of just getting a nice lil iro angus frame in a few months and throw some wheels on it and hope that **** doesn't get jacked. But, yeah my next lock is going to be that krypto chain that's like ****ing heavy. If they break that chain then, well i guess they earned it (the bike).

Sometimes i feel for these guys too, cause its like i have a job, and a place to live. A lot of the thieves out here are like these guys who do nothing but ride around looking for bikes to steal. Basically they sell bikes to support their habit, or pay the rent or whatever. My other friend whose also a messenger in NYC says he knows 'few' messengers (and ex-messengers) who just steal bike parts like: wheels, and headsets and stuff, cause we (messengers) basically get paid peanuts. (rent is ****ing high in nyc)
Dude, stop talking.

Pretty much. My ex's dad got his car stolen right out of their driveway, and they lived in a VERY nice neighborhood in one of the richest counties in the nation, about 20 minutes outside of Baltimore.

I know some people on here turn their nose up at it, but this is a HUGE reason I got a Windsor Hour. And other than a saddle, the only thing I bought for it was a Kryto U-lock. I don't make a living on my bicycle , I just use it for fun and some commuting - but I didn't want to drop a lot of cash on it just to have some ******* steal it from me when I'm taking a **** in a restaurant.

The bottom line is there is no real way to keep a bike safe if you're leaving it unattended for more than a few minutes.

And I don't want to beat a dead horse, but you were out of your mind to use a bike like that for being a messenger. If I was a messenger I would take my "POS" windsor, spray paint it pink and hit it with a wrench a few times to make it look like even MORE of a piece of ****. Flashy frames like yours just scream "steal me I'm expensive".

All that said I'm sorry your **** got snatched up but just use this to learn from.

I would be willing to bet all my bikes and several comically large bags of money that those guys do not ride $2400 bikes.

You have had FOUR BIKES STOLEN. And you act surprised that people can break your lock? I really hope you're just a troll. Seriously.

I came here from C&V for laughs. I was wholly impressed. OP: you're a tard for 1: thinking you're NYC awesome, 2: riding a 2.4k track bike to work and then class. The hell is wrong with you. The next bike you have isn't going to be even better - it's going to be a conversion, b/c that's the sensible thing to do. And then you stick a 140 dollar lock with a REAL padlock on it.

Sucks dude. Spend less than $1500 on the next one and bring it inside. And lock it in there.

That bike was really flashy. Maybe just stick to flat black with no branding on anything from now on. Those ******** knew that they hit the jackpot on you.

Seriously though, you have to know the reality of bikes being stolen and you decided to leave a $2g bike outside for two hours at night? You really have to be trolling.

this thread is the gift that just keeps on giving. thank you all very much. y'all should come on over to italy, riding bikes is much less complicated, saturday and sunday mornings bikes rule the roads and no one has a gun. plus it is hard to get a bad meal, even in the quaintest hill top town. thanks again for the entertainment, have a groovy weekend

If I could ride anywhere, it would be Jakarta. On a car free day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car-Free_Days

Today the Car-Free Day in Jakarta's main avenue is held every two weeks on Sunday . It is held on the main avenue of the city; Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin, from Senayan area to Monas (Monumen Nasional) from 6 AM to 11 AM.
Is it any wonder that the cycling scene is exploding over there?

edit: I would want to ride that if I was trying to get leisurely around fat-ass buildings. If I was trying to get some speed, that would suck. It looks like a MUP on crack.

edit: ****** is censored, so I had to hyphen. I understand for clydes/athena forums and to encourage positive reinforcement, but I found it funny

4 bikes? Do you paint a target on them before going out? You either have the worst luck in the world, or you are doing something wrong. I've known a bunch of messengers who used pretty nice bikes.

I feel bad for you, but not really that bad. Clearly, money is no object to you, since you've had all these bikes stolen and still spend upward of 2Gs buying the next one to mess with. I was a messenger for 3 years in NYC, used a quadrachain and never had an issue. But I never left my bike out there for more than 5 minutes. I had a pista, not flashy, but nice, and I wrapped it.

I'm not here for sympathy, im just writing and reading like anyone else would. I don't think im doing anything wrong by telling my story, some people live in nice areas where bad stuff doesn't happen that often so its okay if they think I am an idiot to get 4 bikes stolen. They probably don't know what it is to live in a bad neighborhood where crackheads break windows to steal cell phone chargers and **** like that. As for those people who are just talking ****, its all cool if that's what they are best at. I actually like to see many different points of view, i learned more from reading different types of content rather than everyone saying their sorry or everyone saying I'm an idiot. I mean it's true, it was pretty idiotic and i did come off cocky, i don't really regret anything i have said.

I have had stuff stolen off my bike but never the whole thing... but I am always super cautious about theft. I always lock up in a clearly visible and busy street. never side streets. If a place will let me take my bike inside I always do. I even lock my bike to the railing inside my apartment hallway. and this is all to keep my $300 Kilo TT from getting stolen. and for the record. if you catch someone in the act. Don't Say anything. Call the cops. If you yell at him he will just run away rather than risk adding an assault and battery charge to petty larceny.

Um, if i caught someone in the act, wow. The number of times i wished i could have caught someone riding a bike of mine or in the process of stealing it. Either A: if they're not bigger than me (im 6'0) than, I'm probably going to knock their lights out and stomp the **** out of them, then walk away with my bike and call it even. B: if they are bigger than me, I would just hope I can find something hard to hit them with.

Cops usually take 30 - 40 mins if it's serious, if it's like someone got is getting their bike stolen then 2 hours i bet. Calling them ain't going to do **** except filing a report and a description. They never find the person and chances are they are going to ride away with your bike in like 30 seconds.

This is what happens to people who get caught stealing bikes in NYC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XKEBkinAew&feature=related true story.

I live in a small town with less than 5000 people in it. My Cinelli track bike is locked TO my Cannondale, in my basement. Someone who owned this house before me years ago had a Harley in the living room and it was stolen from inside the goddamn house in broad daylight with GOOD neighbours.

I built my Cinelli for $1000 less than your Pista with a full Italian build. Buy a cheaper bike, lock the damn thing and yes, you DO shank the motherfornicator that tried to steal it. No hyperbole. If I see you messing with my stuff I don't ever consider my safety, I'm seriously hoping that you as the thief would be worried about your safety if caught.

Not sure if this is the epic troll thread I think ti is but man, you really gotta think that your outlook on life is needing some adjustment right? Your decisions keep losing you money.

Take the advice doled out by everyone else. Stop funding easy bike theft.

I would love to join in the "you're a ****** and we told you so" but if I had a badass lock I wouldn't have thought twice about leaving it locked. I also don't live in NYC. I feel for you bro.

I also love your attitude about this thread and this whole ****ty situation in general. Kudos.
