As far as locks go, I bought this one Kryptonite New York since we don't have a whole lot of bike racks, so I have to lock to something that is usually just out of reach with shorter locks. I also bought this Security Chain which seemed to have good ratings and pretty fair price.

I'd rather have jackholes steal bikes rather than have every jackhole running around with a piece. And Yes, New York really is a dangerous ****************hole, please stay where you are people. My rent is high enough already.

some of oakland can suck yah.
east oakland is absolutely ghetto. i used to DJ at raves there because theres a number of abandoned warehouses but it got super sketchy at night, lots of cars getting broken into, and when gangsters got wind of what was happening on weekends in the industrial areas there was definitely violence. im not scared of fighting, but i am scared of getting shot so yah that didn't last too terribly long.
but theres definitely a nice side to oakland. basically anywhere near lake merrit lol
beyond that there is some good music scenes, art scenes, and food too. definitely large pockets of liberal and creative people, very diverse.
but yah i also heard live gunfire for my first time (and next dozen times) living in west oakland for 3 years. really lame knowing you just heard someone get killed over something stupid like gang affiliation or whatever.

I don't know, guy is openly stealing your **** in public, probably with some tools and you think strong words and a wagging finger will be enough? I just don't know in this day and age. People aren't worried about getting caught, they're worried about pawning your ****.

How did you lock your bike? I usually wrap my kryptonite chain around my frame and front wheel with another kryptonite lock that secures my rear wheel to the frame. Is this a ****ty way of locking my bike?
I also use $30 dollar American Padlock because it's what we use to protect expensive equipment at construction sites but I guess I might have to upgrade.

Okay to be honest i saw this crazy kryptonite chain which was thicker than the fugedaboutit and it had a lock with a sheathed shackle. Plus there is a warranty for up to 4500 on it. I mean i would have to beef up a little bit because carrying a 12 pound chain around would be a bother at my current weight 162. I feel like all these guys who say they bring the bike in with them wherever they go can't really enjoy it that much, because their so paranoid about it getting jacked all the time.
I mean when you think about it, a bike just big a metal toy that we use to get around, and yeah i did spend a lot on it; money comes and goes. I think i learned a lot from building it and will look forward to building an 'EVEN' better track bike in a year or so. I still have my other bike so it's not like i need a replacement bike or anything.
I was thinking of just getting a nice lil iro angus frame in a few months and throw some wheels on it and hope that **** doesn't get jacked. But, yeah my next lock is going to be that krypto chain that's like ****ing heavy. If they break that chain then, well i guess they earned it (the bike).
Sometimes i feel for these guys too, cause its like i have a job, and a place to live. A lot of the thieves out here are like these guys who do nothing but ride around looking for bikes to steal. Basically they sell bikes to support their habit, or pay the rent or whatever. My other friend whose also a messenger in NYC says he knows 'few' messengers (and ex-messengers) who just steal bike parts like: wheels, and headsets and stuff, cause we (messengers) basically get paid peanuts. (rent is ****ing high in nyc)

i wonder if there is a gps tracking device with an iphone app for bikes. like, you drop it into the frame or something. maybe into the rear triangle, small enough to drop in, would be a ***** to get out.
and if there isn't...
i was thinking it would be cute to design "This bike is protected by *insert bogus name* GPS tracking device" stickers. perhaps most bike thieves would call "bull****" but it might scare off some of the more gullible ones.... idunno.
