Lightest / Best{?** commuter bike [NYC] ??

Hey dudes,

I've been reading up on some posts here about different bikes... but I'm not really sure what's right for me.. I'm going to commute in NYC [brooklyn mostly] and I want something cheap / light that won't totally poop on me in like a month. I'm used to pretty shoddy bikes (was riding my boss's old mountain bike and BOY was that heavy and ****ty..)

I've been scoping out BD and stuff like the Kilo TT , Dawes SST, and Windsor The Hour.. I'm not really privvy to the differences [except price] and it seems like free brakes are available with the Kilo so that doesn't seem to be an issue..

I just wanna know which is of these bikes is going to be the lightest / sturdiest? my gf would be buying something similar and I want something she'd be able to handle too..

thanks!

Those steel bikes you mentioned are pretty sturdy.. not "light" though. Depends on what you think is light though.

Either way, any of them will do.

If you plan on leaving it outside for extended periods of time, get something cheap or invest in some solid ulocks.

I'm not quite sure what 'light' is in terms of bikes, I'm not a big dude... I just want something I can pick up without too much hassle.. I wish I knew how heavy my mountain bike was because it was rough on my scrawny arms [lol].

Just heard from my brother that the fuji feather is super light? I'm definitely going to be leaving it outside sometimes during the day, but will totally bring in at night and such (and at work).. Fuji is quite a bit more though, I'm not sure if it's worth risking that expense?

Will you be carrying it around or riding it?

I can understand wanting something light to carry. Not all of us on the ground floor. I carry my bike to my condo 6 flights of stairs and weight begins to matter after riding all day.

If it isn't 40 pounds you can carry it up the stairs without crying.

Doable obviously, but nice to have a bike that is half the weight.

Unless the OP's body has the strength of a bucket of mashed potatoes, any bike he's considering will be around 20 lbs and be relatively easy to carry up some stairs.

- Inexpensive
- Lightweight
- Strong

Pick 2 because you can't have all 3.

Been commuting on a mostly stock Kilo for about 6 months now, no problem. Added an extra ten pounds or so with a seatpost rack but carrying it up/down a couple flights of steps is manageable. It's plenty durable and cheap enough that it won't kill you if it gets stolen. For urban commuting you'll definitely want to replace the crappy Kenda 23c tires. I put a couple Panaracer 28c RiBMo tires which ride well and are confirmed bombproof.
