Removing rear tire with drum attached

We have a CoMotion Speedster with an Arai drum brake attached to the rear hub. We had our first rear flat, and embarrassingly, can't figure out how to remove the rear wheel with the drum on it. We got as far as unscrewing a cable in the way, but after that we're clueless. Does anyone have any instructions for a couple of klutzes? Thanks.

Could you post a picture?

For the past 15 years or so most bikes with Arai brakes have quick disconnects. The brake cable is simply held onto the brake arm by spring tension. Push the arm forward and the brake cable falls right off.

Prior to that, the brake cable ran through a drilled out bolt and you had to release the bolt from the brake arm with a little wrench.

Slide the cable out through the slot on the brake arm. You might need to push the arm forward slightly. Open the quick release and let the wheel (with drum attached) drop downward. As it drops out you have to let the wheel move forward slightly to let the action arm slide out of the "c" shaped holder on the chainstay.

+1 to CGinOhio's suggestion. Once you have the cable released, the whole unit will slide out of the drop outs, keeping in mind that you will have to slide it all a tad forward to free the action arm. Shouldn't be necessary to loosen or disengage anything else. Follow the procedure in reverse when you're re-installing the wheel. Mike

Thank you so much. That bit about sliding the wheel forward makes sense; and it also explains why this morning, after jiggling everything haphazardly in frustration, the wheel finally came off; he probably inadvertently moved it forward but had no idea what he'd done. We're saving your instructions, CGinOhio & mchell.

Also, if you ever want to remove the Arai drum from your hub, you can make a cheap removal tool with a 2x3 or 2x4 piece of wood and a couple of long bolts + a few washers and nuts. Measure the space between two of the Arai removal holes on the drum, drill holes in the piece of wood to the same width, and then thread the bolts into the holes.

Or, you could buy the spiffy tool from TandemsEast (and maybe other tandem vendors) if you don't want the hassle of making one yourself.
